Force delete
Posted by Mccaincow on March 9, 2006 at 5:16 pmI am copying the contents of P2 cards to a firewire drive and then trying to delete the files. They are locked and Jan mentions force deleting them. I am having trouble figuring out how to do this. Anyone?

March 9, 2006 at 5:58 pmI tried that and it didnt seem to work. I’ve downloaded a program called force delete 1.2 (from versiontracker) and it works great, you just drop the files on the program in your dock and they disappear.

March 9, 2006 at 6:08 pmBeware of this method. I can’t say for sure but i am having issues accessing my footage off of a firewire hard drive after doing this same thing.
My work flow was to shoot footage, insert p2 card into powerbook, copy contents folder onto firewire drive, rename folder contents-1 and so on(this was because we had 3 camera and
didn’t want all of them to be contens folders), then force delete the footage. We did not copy .txt file into the folder, and it would not delete. so this may be the trouble I am having accessing the footage.
I know it is there, but, fcp 5.0.4, does not recognize the folders when I try to import. And i cannot import the files or folder because it does not recognize the format.
I am stumped. I do not know how to access this footage. Anybody have any suggestions? i am current with p2 software and fcp software.Todd McMullen

March 9, 2006 at 9:00 pmDude, the lastclip.txt file is crucial for importing to FCP. Read this:

March 9, 2006 at 9:19 pmdude, thanks for info, but I can still pull up the files if they are in the root directory named CONTENTS without the .txt file. Strange.
but only one CONTENTS folder at a time.Todd McMullen

March 9, 2006 at 9:37 pm[todd mcmullen] “dude” 😀
So you’re saying that you can import them into FCP without that text file?
And for mccaincow, to force delete, hold option when going to “empty trash”.

March 9, 2006 at 10:02 pmHi Todd,
Also, do not rename the CONTENTS Folder, this is a guaranteed not to work process. You should put the entire Contents into another folder if this is the way you want to work and name that folder. This will work. To go back and fix the naming that you have done, make up new folders and then rename the CONTENTS folder CONTENTS in all caps. Then Apple will recognize. The last little text file on the card I had to do an Open Apple i for info and then unlock that little text file and it would then allow me to unlock it. Also don’t forget to empty the trash when finished or your card will not be empty.
Hope that helps,
Jan

March 9, 2006 at 10:45 pmYes,
you can import into fcp without the .txt file. Now my question is…how can you not have more than 1 contents folder if you are shooting multiple cameras or just using more cards.
I may be confused here but if i was shooting a long take of something and I only had 2 p2 cards, and one was full, and I had someone dump it to a firewire drive,
and then the next one was full and i had someone dump it, and so on, but, they all have to be named contents, in capital to be recognized later? How does this work? I currently have it as follows. Camera 1>Contents-1, Content-2 etc.. Its basicly like naming tapes for each camera.
so as I understand Jan, you are saying I should label, Camera 1>Contents-1, camera 1>Contents-2, etc..
I will try and reply.

March 9, 2006 at 11:06 pmThanks everyone for replies. I found work around but discovered if you forget the .txt file then you can still access footage in FCP.
Footage looks fantastic for some extremely low light and an extreme amount of red colored stage lights.
I’d personnly give a few 12 packs to whoever could get that .txt file into the main contents folder.cheers,

What I do is a folder called Camera1Card1 (or whatever) inside is another folder CONTENTS and the LASTCLIP.txt file. Then I make another folder outside of the first folder called Camera1Card2 and inside is the folder CONTENTS and LASTCLIP.txt file. Camera1Card1 and Camera1Card2 are separate folders in the “top level” of my firewire drive (some might call it root level). I then point FCP to Camera1card1 and import, then I point FCP to Camera1Card2 and import.
