  • Footage Skipping HELP

Posted by Raymond Tuquero on April 24, 2008 at 2:32 pm

So … I have worked with Final Cut Professionally for about 5 years now. And every once in a while I run into this issue with Capturing footage from a DVCAM and now a HDV Tape down converted as DVCAM. Just haven’t had a time to address this with outside knowledge.

I usually pick another shot and move on.

The issue is this: I am capturing HDV footage (Previously Logged) a warning sign pops up first about the fact that I am capturing NDF footage into a DF setting. Ok, I can change that. Now before I did ignore it and the tape captured fine.

But now after capturing the Footage is skipping, yup Skipping. Awkward. Well, I did the usual troubleshooting thing.
    1) Check the Tape in another deck to see if TC or if the shot itself is skipping … NOPE
    2) Check the deck settings … I tried capturing in NDF and DF … NOPE
    3) Switch the Firewire Cable – NOPE
    4) Change the settings in FCP – NOPE
    5) Capture Now setting with no device control … mmm …. No again.
    6) I also Threw away the Final Cut Prefs to make sure there is nothing going on there.

So, Does anyone have any other suggestions. I am in your knowledgeable hands. Because just about half the shots of footage I really need is doing that. … I have a while before the deadline. But I would like to get this resolved.

    My Configuration:
    MAC PRO – 2.8 Quad – 4GB of RAM
    1.5 TB RAID System
    AJA KONA Card
    SONY HDV M15U Capture Deck
Tapes Recorded on a Sony V1 HDV Camera
    FCP 6.0.2

THANKS FOR ANY HELP GIVEN … PLEASE DON’T BE SHY ABOUT ANY SUGGESTIONS. I WILL TRY JUST ABOUT ANYTHING … Except throw the computer out the Window. 😉

[Raymond Tuquero] “Except throw the computer out the Window. 😉 “

That is truly the only way to get rid of the problem, at least temporarily.

Your raid system, is a firewire raid system?

ANd the tapes you are capturing, the deck is doing the down-convert or you had those tapes down-converted?

Is your tape DF or NDF?

Well … I for the Throwing part … I still like my window.

As for the Raid, it is connected via Fibre Channel 4GB (Big o thing). And I am capturing footage by hardware downconverting … I am not a fan of downconverting then capturing. I feel footage done that way looses some info and doesn’t look as good as it was originally shot. The deck has a setting to downconvert the footage with either Crop Edges, squeezed, or with Black bars.

Still pondering … I had an issue with this before … and it was back when the Raid had an update that messed up a setting change to screw with FCP. But the last update fixed that. Do you think it messed up the setting again?

Hmmm … More diving is needed.

    Thanks for the reponse,

Don’t know about your raid. I was just making sure it wasn’t firewire.

As far as the df/ndf, are your tapes df or ndf? if ndf, make sure to choose the firewire ndf device control setting.
