  • Footage imported from DVD – sync issues – any suggestions?

I am cutting promos for broadcast shows that sometimes aren’t finished so we do an offline from a BITC DVD and sort it out later from the digi master.
FCP always complains that this footgae isn’t ‘optimised’ but rarely there is a problem.
On the current job I have the footage playing out of sync in a fairly random way (pic a few frames late) and then sometimes it plays ok. Clearly I can’t slip the sync on the timeline because it is only the playback that is the problem. I have tried trashing prefs, quitting out and in again (sometimes helps for a little while and then goes out of sync again).
The footage was brought in through DVDxDV to ProRes 720×576 PAL and this as what the sequence is. It is stored on a 2TB GRAID2 with more than 1TB space left. FCP 6.0.5 MacPro 8core 2.8GHz 8GB RAM running Leopard 10.5.6.
    Any suggestions gladly received. Thanks

Try ripping the same DVD with MPEG Streamclip, it’s free. I have both DVDxDV and Streamclip, and there are just sometimes when one works properly and the other one doesn’t.

Recently I tried to rip a dvd for FCP and kept getting a prompt to purchase MPEG2 playback from Apple. I had done this before and never had to purchase anything. Did something change?

I have always used MPEG Streamclip to convert ripped DVDs of library / archive footage to whatever Quicktime format I need to include in off-lines of programmes and never had any sync issues. As David suggests try this free software and see if it helps.

    Thanks for the response David
It seems on further investigation to be a problem with the Kona card since if I switch audio output to ‘Built in line out’ it’s all in sync and happy again.
Have emailed AJA and am waiting for a response
    Thanks again

There’s precious little that can go wrong with the Kona card typically that would cause this issue, the drivers can and do get corrupted at times when Pro Apps or QT software is updated. So, uninstall the Kona drivers using their uninstall utility that was loaded in your Applications folder during install.

Also, look in your System Settings>>Playback Control tab, and if yours has a “4” in the Frame Offset not a “0” like mine, change it. 4 is the default and it’s wrong for anyone using a Kona card.
