  • Footage from Canon 5DmkII will not open in Quicktime or convert

Posted by John Henion on August 27, 2009 at 11:47 pm

I was just given a bunch of footage for a project that can only be opened and played in VLC. The footage was shot on a Canon EOS 5Dmk II and has an ‘.mp4’ extension. The shooter claims that this is an .H264 file, but VLC reveals a ‘.mpgv’ video codec – something that there is very little information in these forums or online.

When I do try to open the file via quicktime i can this error message: “file contains some invalid data”

I tried to convert using mpeg stream clip – no luck. No luck with compressor either.

Anyone with any leads on how I get this footage converted would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    John

The files should just open. Can you get the compact flash card back?

    Thanks Peter –

You mean the files ‘should just open’ in quicktime? That’s definitely not happening. Do you think it sounds like these files may have been corrupted?

Can’t get the flash card back easily. So i’m hoping there’s an alternative…but i’m hitting a wall here with ideas
