    Hi Everyone!

First time poster, long time lurker. I love this site. Its like candy to me.

    Brass tacks:

About doing Spec Work for a Demo Reel and Getting started in Motion Graphics…

I have read that it is acceptable to do spec work for established or existing companies and businesses as long as you put a “disclaimer” in with your reel somewhere stating that it is for speculation only.

First of all. Is this even a good idea? As of yet I have ZERO actual experience in the field and am looking into the pros and cons of using a real company for spec work. (ie; “what is the best way to get the old foot through the door?”)

Most of the stuff I’ve done has been for companies that only exist between my ears and would be THRILLED if this was an option as the process of “designing” a complete make-believe company from the ground up, I find, can be creatively taxing.

And if so then what EXACTLY should this disclaimer say?

Actually SKIP EVRYTHING YOU JUST READ.

And I appologize for wasting everyone’s time.

I would like to hear from any working professionals in the field of Motion Graphics as to how they actually got their start in the business. Any advice?

    Thank you.

They are the ones using you. You will be utilizing them. Two different things.

Absolutely do spec work. Do whatever inspires you to do your best imagery for your reel. If your not “selling” your reel or portraying a company in an overly negative light, everything is cool. Generally same thing with music. For your reel, your not going to get bothered. But if you use it for a paying job, the rules all change so be careful.
    ……
some reels have “shot lists” which breaks down exactly what it is you are responsible for in each animation. This is a good place to list that xyz company dod not hire you for said work. Personally, im not sure
it matters a whole lot. You are displaying a technical and artistic
use of your talents. Could be for joes burger joint, or Mc d’s.
    …..
I did some stuff for Miller Brewing that actually got me work for them.
Same with a few other clients years and years ago.

    Good luck Trevor
