Use the Boris 3D Text Tool. Tremendously better than the FCP tool and it uses vector graphics so the text looks better. Also lots of option for kerning, shadows, outlines, etc…..
FCP’s text tool is good for quick, temporary placeholders, but as you noted, very limited in ability.
