    Hi all,

I have very limited experience with C4D(work mostly in Avid and AE). Mostly, clients send me models, I animate a camera going around them to point out certain features or add 3D text to videos.

Client sent me the attached 13341_hanger.c4d.zip It’s a device that moves around a plant floor and depending on the work being down, the base moves up and down as the structure opens and closes. What would be the basic steps in rigging this thing and getting it to open and close correctly? Have to option to outsource this if needed, but if it’s not too insane would like to keep it in house.

    Thanks,

Okay, I’m seeing that I need to use Inverse Kinematics to do what I need. Is there a easy way to get this .obj file to import better than I have been getting? When I merge objects, the above attachment was the only way I got more than 2 different layers by choosing “Materials” under the Splitting option. Is there something I can do to get this to come into C4D better, or do I need to reach out to the people who sent me the file and have them do something differently?

This is the original file, 13342_hanger.obj.zip

    Thanks

Perhaps knowing which software it came from would give us a better insight if exists a better intermediate format to import from.

But nonetheless what you got was almost the same I get when using an old riptide obj importer (I just get some extra selection tags, maybe you could make use of that or not. Since they came from the same material, not sure you could use them as helpers to texture things.)

About the rigging part, there’s a lot you’ll need to separate in order to have just the right parts moving. But without too much thought I believe that splitting stuff and just animating them would be more straightforward and preferable instead of rigging. (At least for myself).

There is a pretty confusing (at first) way of, lets say, precomping stuff in C4D. Its called time tracks. (Have you heard of it?)

Essentially you can do succeeding linear animations and tie it all to a time track. Almost like you would pre-comp something in AE to later on time remmap the composition to create easiness at any part of the animation. So what I’m saying is that you could do a linear animation with PSR from opened to closed, link all that to a time track. Now you have a single track that controls your animation from 0% to 100%.
