Hello all. Long time reader, noob poster. I searched the forums for an issue like mine but I didn’t find anything so I thought someone could shed some light on my problem.
I am attempting to log and transfer clips for a recent shoot. We were running two cameras and downloading to an external FW800 drive via a powerbook. Each download session had it’s own folder with two sub-folders designated for each camera.
I have been able to log and transfer each of the sessions no problem until I got to the 8th sessions camera 2 folder. That folder contains the normal CONTENTS/last clip.txt file but the CONTENTS folder only contains the VIDEO and AUDIO folders. I don’t know where the CLIP, ICON, PROXY, and VOICE folders went.
Is there some way that I can re-build those folders? FCP will not transfer the clips because it says that I have an “invalid file structure or unsupported media”. I am running FCP 6.0.5 and I have had to re-build the lastclip file in the past so I would think that because I have the VIDEO folder there would be a work around? Any help? Oh, and the 9th and final download session was prefect for both cameras…of course…

Hmm- the original folders are necessary for a proper ingest. You could try one of the MXF translators to access the video directly however.

Great. Thanks for the input. I will try the lite version and buy it if It works out. Thanks!

Huh….Well, I was able to access the MXF files via the lite version of mxf4mac. I do have a complaint/question. If I understand this correctly, I now have to shell out over a hundred bucks to solve a problem that I didn’t have anything to do with? I am not saying that it wasn’t operator error. Who knows. I could have dragged the Contents and lastclip.txt files to the external HD and then somehow accessed the contents folder, dragged four out of the six enclosed folders to the trash and emptied the trash by accident but it doesn’t seem very likely. I will now have to check the folders on every download. What happens when/if the contents of one of the folders is missing? Should I have to count the clips as they are shot and compare that to the contents of the folders too? O.K. this is turning into a rant. Maybe Panasonic has an answer? Has anybody else had this experience? Sorry for the rantyness but when does the babysitting end? Ugg.

    Hi Graham,

In general a drag and drop is not a very safe way to handle the footage. I would use a helper program at the very least. YOu could use the P2CMS from Panasonic, it is free for the download, got to http://www.panasonic.com/p2hd, look under the download area. There are other programs that offer additional features and levels of sophistication. One of those is “babysitting” as you say, these programs will verify your copies down to the bit, this includes the P2CMS.

Anyhow I really do endorse the use of helper programs, they do grunt work that is picky and painful.

    Hello Jan,

Thank you for the thoughtful suggestion. I did as you instructed but found that Panasonic does not support anything earlier than an Intel based Mac for the P2CMS. Perhaps when our studio upgrades in the future we will take advantage of the free software. Until then, I will try to find another way to have a secure transfer method.

Actually it will support the G4s as well, sorry it doesn’t sound that way. Go ahead and try it. No harm done and some babysittng saved.

[Graham Sykes] “Sorry for the rantyness but when does the babysitting end?”

Forgive me if I sound scoldy, but I am coming off an overnight shoot and I am feeling saucy. Luckily for you, Graham, you get the receiving end of it due to your snide remark about paying money for a process that you yourself screwed up. You expect others to pay for your mistakes and misunderstandings?

If you personally cut a notch of out your tape and threw that notch away, would you expect to be able to use that tape or gain that information back for free?

Welcome to the data world of video. These aren’t just any files that you would use on your computer and rearrange/rename/delete to your liking. These are camera masters that have a format and structure that needs to be adhered to if you want your media to be compatible with any NLE. If you screw it up, you pay in more ways than one. Okay enough yelling, and here’s the real advice:

Shotput Pro from Imagine Software will be your lifetime babysitter for data transfers.
