I’m trying to figure out what the most efficient folder hierarchy would be while editing a feature film. I’ll be using 3 drives to store the media (while shooting) and one additional drive for doing an offline edit on FCP using transcoded Prores files. Right now this is what I’m thinking…

    3x Storage HDD > Dailies > Picture & Sound Folders (each folder contains…) > Day # (date) > Data

Editing HDD > FCP > Capture Scratch > Project Title > Dailies > Picture & Sound Folders (each folder contains…) > Day # (date) > Data

Once I import the Dailies into FCP I’ll create Scene folders and merge the Picture and Sound media clips and put the new (merged) clips in their corresponding Scene folders.

    Some questions of mine include…

    1) Should I incorporate a Reel # folder into this scheme, after Day #?
    2) Is there any reason not to put both picture and sound on the backup HDDs or should I use separate drives?
    3) Is merging the best way to go about connecting the picture and sound (even though the audio loses its unique name in the process)?

    Thanks so much, Ryan
