I’ve built a 3d scene entirely in after effects 7.0 and i’m trying to apply FOG 3D to it. so far i’ve tried just adding an adjustment layer to the top of the comp and applying the effect, but nothing happens.

i’ve tried to find information about this but have only come up with info on using FOG 3d with rla files.

does anyone know if fog 3d only works with rla type files? can you not apply the effect to 3d scenes built in AE? If anyone could help i would really appreciate it since the help file doesn’t have much info.

    thanks,

    evan

You could try to pre-comp the scene and nest it in another comp. Then just apply the effect. Then collapse the transformations.

Never tried what you are saying, but I think its worth a shot.

3d fog only works with 2 different 3d image types and does not work with a AE 3d scene. For more info please search the forums and also in the future please search the forums before posting.

Most 3rd party plugs will do what you’re expecting. There are a number of ways to do it without, that you will find here, but they are not using Fog 3D. After making fog, I saved the project in a place where I keep lots of repeatable assets (okay, so the “parts bin”), because you just need to adjust it next time. You can render it out separately too, and use it again as a video source. Usually it’s easiest to generate a couple of layers of light “clouds” that pass each other, but I bet there’s already a *great* tutorial out there on making fog. I’ve done it before, but been a long time. I don’t know where all you look, but I come here first for a quick tutorial/thread search, then work my way down the link list to find out what to do. I understand though – when you click on the “lightning” plug, you get “lightning” (convincing or not), not a screen that stares back with no response.

thanks everyone. i tried the collapsed layer with a precomp before i posted with no luck. i guess i’m out of luck. i’m going to look into those 3d party plug-ins since i already have a pretty render intensive scene.

    thanks,

I’ve seen tutorials. Somewhere. I don’t recall. Google the hell out of 3d FOG IN AFTER EFFECTS. I think it is a Tint effect, with expressions attached.
