  • .flv File Not Playing In TimeLine

Posted by Mark Fanjoy on November 7, 2008 at 4:33 am

I downloaded a .flv file from YouTube to use in a Motion and FC project. The .flv file will play back in the FC Viewer, but not in the timeline (dropped frames error.) The .flv file will play back in Motion, I can create a .mov export of the Motion sequence I built around it, and the sequence will play back as a stand alone element in QT Player and in the FC Viewer, but will not play back in the Time line as a .mov (again dropped frames error.)

Any ideas what may be my issue (about this topic. My wife has a grocery list of my other issues!)

    Thanks!

Must be a H264, so try changing the extension to .mov.
But I’m not sure that you will get RT playing in the FC time line.
H264 is a delivery format. Not for editing.

.flv is not an editing codec. FCP is not designed to play back non-standard video files for editing.

If you can, transcode that to a quicktime movie of some sort and then edit.

Okay, thank you. I changed the extension to .mov and that did not work. I converted the .flv file to a .mov file using MGEG Streamclip. Still, no go.

What I don’t understand is why this file, whether converted to .mov or NOT, it will play back in Motion3 and in FC6 Viewer, but will not play back when dragged and rendered in the Timeline. Leads me to believe it is a configuration setting within FCP.

Any other ideas and/or feedback will be greatly appreciated. I’m stuck and need this piece to incorporate into my project.

    Thanks!

    Hi Mark,
If it doesn’t work when you changed the extension, is because is not a H264. And if you are able to play the .flv with QT (FC viewer, Motion, MPGSTreamclip,..) is because you have instaled the Flash component.
    but this doesn’t changes nothing.
In what kind of file are you converting the .flv with MPGStreamclip?

Rafael, I’m converting the .flv file in Streamclip to a .mov file using a DVCPro50 codec. Once converted, it plays back in Motion and FC fine, but not in the Timeline.

    Thanks!

    Hi Mark,
This is really strange. Can you play the DVCpro50 in QT?

Yes, once I convert the .flv file in Streamclip to a .mov file with a DVCPro50 Codec, I can double click on the file and QT plays it right away. I have done a Kaspersky scan on the .flv file and it is clean if you are curious enough to email the .flv file and see what it does for you.

I’m going to download another .flv file at random from YouTube just to see if it is my conversion routine or specific to that file, although I’m guessing a .flv file is a .flv file regardless.

    Thanks!

Yes a ,flv is an .flw, but once converted to QT DVCPro should be working fine in FC, most of all if QT is able to read it.
If you want to send it to me, in my web site you will find my e-mail.

Raphael, you have helped me more than you realize just by posing questions. I solved the mystery, sort of, but am not sure what to do about it in the future (but I’ll figure it out.)

I created a new Motion3 sequence with existing clean .mov footage I had. It had the same problem, dropped frames and would not play back. So, I removed the video and exported from Motion3 only the graphics sequence I created. All of a sudden when I drag that .mov file into the Timeline I receive a prompt saying…

ATTENTION: THIS CLIP DOES NOT MATCH THIS SEQUENCE’S SETTINGS OR ANY OF YOUR SEQUENCE PRE SETS. FOR BEST PERFORMANCE YOUR SEQUENCE AND EXTERNAL VIDEO SHOULD BE SET TO THE FORMAT OF THE CLIPS YOU ARE EDITING.

So, I say “YES” to the prompt and presto, it plays back fine. On top of that, the original sequence AND the new test sequences I created play back fine too. Whatever this setting adjustment did in FCP it seems to now allow those sequences to play back.

I even imported the raw .flv file directly into FCP, dragged it into the Timeline, rendered it, and it played back fine!!

Go figure. I’m assuming it has something to do with this FCP format setting. I’ll have to learn what that is.

Thanks for your patience with my issue!
