FLV compression.
Please help…I’m losing my long blond locks on this one.
My web designer needs my video in flv at the 580×326 size. I go to fcp and export using quicktime conversion. I resize. I say high quality at 700kbps. But the video comes out dark and aliasing.
So I went online and saw someone says, “resize and use pro res 422 hq). Well, did that and it’s the right size, but it’s not flv.
I’m losing it. Help! Need my beautiful video to be resized and in flv without the aliasing and darkness.

So if your Prores master looks OK, open it in QT and export as FLV.
Make sure that Key-frames doesn’t show any value or say AUTO.
BTW, tell your web designer that Flash Player reads H264, which is a better codec than Flash.rafael

Export as the size he wants as h264. Put the quality slider just to the right of medium. Put the Keyframes to auto. Change the audio to AAC. Make sure fast start is checked. When you’re done, change .mov to .flv to make uninformed web guy happy. There isn’t a flv export option from QT.

Bret, How do I change the h.264 from mov to flv? Or can he just plug in the flv file and do nothing else (which is what I think you are saying). He seems to think that he will have to recompress it–which if I do all of this and flash will read h.264 then that shouldn’t be.
I just don’t know web design, so I don’t know what to say to him so that it gets done right on his end.

You just change to .mov extension to .flv – don’t let them recompress!

Now I have another problem…when I compress to h264, the video now looks washed out. Maybe this is unavoidable. I moved the slider to ‘best” and the sound is AAC, then fast start, and auto keyframes. I did NOT change the filters.
I did one compression, which was really just a resizing to the size it will be on the website (580×325) and it’s a mov file at 1.71 gb, and it looks exactly like I want it to. The h264 gets compressed down to 89mb, so that may be the reason it’s washing out. Any happy medium to be had? Any ideas?
BTW thank you all to those who responded earlier! So helpful. I’m hoping someone’s got an answer to this as well.

Thx Michael. Change .mov to .flv sounds intuitive, but I can see how someone would read that and say “how?” I hope they get it now. FLV is just a video file format wrapper like QuickTime. And it supports different codecs. So, if you make a QuickTime h264 .mov file, you can just rename the .mov to .flv.

Not sure how long the video is, but 89megs is pretty doable for a web video. Open Quicktime, go to preferences, and at the bottom make sure “Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility” is checked. That will probably alleviate some of the washed out you’re seeing. ProRes is one gamma, and web videos should be a different gamma for viewing on computer screens. Enabling that will change the way your files are shown on your system.

Okay, I’m feeling pretty hopeless, but I gotta ask: You mean open Quicktime Pro? I just have Quicktime Player on my system. I’d rather do it the way you suggest (by clicking on FCS color compatability) but I can’t find where the checkbox is. I’m beginning to think I didn’t deserve to go to Vassar.
Before I got your latest response, I went back to compress to h264 and I added a bit of saturation (from 100 to 110) before I compressed again. Any problem with that? Other than the credits (which I did in Motion and now they are aliasing), everything looks pretty good. But I’m only looking on one monitor.
