Hi folks. I am trying to do an effect that I saw in a spot last week and I am having a hard time doing it in AE exclusively. Maybe you can help.

If you have the Zaxwerks Invig. then do a search for a tutorial by Serge Hamad that’s called “Creating a 3D Filmstrip or Flowing Ribbon”. Hope that helps.

That was my first stop, but looked pretty weak overall. I was trying to get something with a bit of actual depth, but I’m quickly realizing that 3D is almost the only way to get that combination of motion and depth. Thanks for the input.

i did my ribbons in C4d and they looked awesome… then when i tried to emulate them in AE using plugin support they looked… umm… weak! that’s the trade off… for the depth and angles etc you need the full support of 3d and AE just isnt there yet…

Yeah, I kind of figured that out the hard way. Might you have a project file that I could sample to teach myself some soft-core dynamics, or do you have a sample of what your able to obtain so that I might review it and learn from it?

    Thanks,

Not to leech but can I have that project file as well? I’m been trying to figure out how to do this for ages in Lightwave, but I’m moving over to C4D, so any help would be appreciated!!!!!!

    Thanks!

    hi there…

    open C4d
    create a spline…. any spline will do…
create a circle with a radius of, say, 20 m
    create a sweep nurbs

place the circle and spline as children of the sweep nurb…

    1. sweep nurb
    2. circle
    3. spline

if you put the spline above the circle it looks funny…

then animate the “growth” parameter of the sweep nurb across your timeline…. swap out the cricle for a straight line and you have a ribbon… or whatever…

    you can add cameras etc…

    enjoy…
