A while back I posted my obnoxious discovery: On2, which makes the excellent Flash encoder Flix Pro 8 that I have installed on my old desktop, won’t let me install the program on my new laptop. To do so I would have to buy a whole new copy for another $250. So I looked around and found Flash Video MX Pro, for $70. I was finally able to do a side by side comparison of the Flash output of each, and I can see no significant differences.

Note you can download free trials of each. Both paste a watermark over the resulting Flash, but you can experiment this way before you decide to buy.

One small problem I had with Flash Video MX Pro is it did not seem to respect, “keep same proportions”. However, I was able to easily set the proportions correctly.

Perhaps some Vegas users have other Flash encoding software to propose.

Surprisingly, i use “super”…yes, this application is free and would
at first glance seem like a gismo for amateurs, not professionals…
It certainly produces excellent professional output.Whatever Vegas
cannot handle, SUPER is what i call upon, including producing
excellent flash formats. You can customise your format of choice output in great detail. This app. is even better than similar tools you would pay for, Trust me.

Steve, does Super make SWF players for the FLV Flash files?

I tried Super. Possibly I don’t have the right settings. In comparison to FlixPro8 output of the same AVI file, I find:
    –Super has less sharp detail
–if the original is 4:3, Super makes a 16:9 frame with the 4:3 inside, and black vertical borders left and right
–no swf player. As a result, the viewer has no way to control the playing; the Flash starts playing as soon as the page opens. No way to pause it, go back, etc.

Like I said, maybe there are settings I am missing.

Flix Pro 8 is a pretty pricey program to not allow you to move it to another computer as MOST programs will as long as you don’t use more than one at a time. Hard to believe.

Indeed, it is hard to believe, and even harder to accept. But so it goes. Hence the search for a good alternative.
