Okay guys im working on this script which calls for our driver to wake up inside of a wrecked car that’s been turned upside down. Now, I dont have the money or pull to shoot this sort of thing for real so I was wondering if someone could give me some pointers or lead me in a direction. Would it work if I just photographed, say, my car and in photoshop flipped it and made it look all wrecked and then just comp that into my wide shot? I really dont want it to look cheesy. The best way would be to create the car in 3D but unfortunately I dont have the knowledge for it. What do u guys think?

Hahah! whoops! well…i thought of the junk yard idea but Im not sure i would want the car to look completely totaled. I mean it has to look wrecked but not flattened or anything.

If I did do this, are you saying to put the flipped junker car on or in front of the green screen so I could just key that and “composite” that into my final shot? I dont want it to look like this guy is in a flipped car in a junk yard ya know?

I’m totally with the idea of removing the establishing shot and trying to be a bit cleverer about it using the editing… BUT if you want to try it digitally remember that flipping a photo of a car doesn’t look like a car that has been flipped. The first and most obvious thing is that a car that has been flipped will have an exposed underside (to a normal standing pov) so somehow you have to light and photograph the car from below…

Or make sure your camera stays high (lo when flipped)… Or get out the red pencil and put a line through it in the script. Good luck and don’t forget to show us the results if you attempt it.

Don’t forget … the driver would be in the seat if you shot the car right-side up and flopped the shot. If the car were really upside-down, he’d probably be lying on the ceiling of the car (Men in Black), unless he were belted-in pretty well. Then the audience would expect the gag when he has to undo the seat belt and get out.

    Well, I would.

And he’d need a short haircut.

Damn you’re right about the underbelly of the car…hmmm…what about having the actor just sit on a bunch of phonebooks and press is body up against the ceiling of the car and then flip that in Final Cut. I mean…I guess it could work but he’d have to stay away from wearing loose clothing that would droop if hanging upside down.

Indeed. Storyboard it out. Get a buddy to sit in a car and take a snap. Do an animatic.

When in doubt, board it out.
