I’ve had unpredictable results using Flip4Mac to create WMV files inside FCP. I have the pro HD version, and it has produced good results, but unreliably. Often sections of a file are labelled “Unrendered” despite the fact that the sequence was rendered.

I’ve been trying to use it on sequences; should I be exporting/importing a QT movie and trying it on that? Should I be using Flip4Mac in Compressor instead?

And, if there is a good recent tutorial out there I would love to know about it.

Or, is this just a flakey app? I’ve read on this forum that upgraading to the latest version of Flip4Mac can be hazardous.

I use Flip4Mac regularly. The only time I have seen this is when a sequence is not fully rendered. Do you have all items checked under Sequence>Render and Sequence>Render All (Sequence in the menu bar)? Try deleting render files through Render Manager (Tools>Render Manager) and re-rendering. You can export right from your sequence by using Export>With Quicktime Conversion and choosing Windows Media. There is no need to export at QT movie first.

[Nick Toth] “I use Flip4Mac regularly.”

    Thanks Nick.

Are there some default settings that work well for you?

And, do you find that you have to do a global gamma adjustment for .wmv since that format usually is played on Windows machines?

To avoid the unrendered results just click on all the render states in the render selections and make sure all states are rendered.

It looks like this will be fixed in the next release coming soon.

There may be a new beta of Flip4Mac available if you have expressed interest in getting their latest products. I’d post a link but the email I received seems to indicate it’s not a public beta.
Download and install at your own risk.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Thanks David. I like your sigfile. One reason that people don’t read the manual is that the manuals are not that well-written, if they exist at all. It amazes me that most software companies do not take advantage of the opportunity to use the Internet for an interactive guide to their products.

    Bob,
what was the resolution to the unrendered spots.

    I have the same issue.

only when I have multi video layers.

I have the HD version. don’t see anything in the flip3mac info.

    curious.

    Bob,
curious as to what the outcome on the unrendered parts.

I have the same issue on WMV exports.

I think it has something to do with layers.

single layer of video goes out perfectly.

It had nothing to do with layers. It was simply that ALL rendering had to be done before export. That meant checking all render states (colors) in the render menus before rendering.

If you download public beta 2.2.1.7 the problem should be gone.

Silly question but did you contact their technical support about the issue?

[Craig Seeman] “Silly question but did you contact their technical support about the issue?”

    Hi Craig,

No, and you make a good point. I looked on their website just now and found that there is indeed a way to contact them for tech support. I simply didn’t see it the first time I looked — got sidelined on their not-very-useful FAQs and forums, and instead of going back to their support page I turned to the COW.

Is the beta version safe for ordinary folks who just want results?
