I’m currently tackling the art of exporting, learning about codecs and file formats. I was trying to export a short sequence for a friends web site. He wants something with .avi, .wmv, or .mpeg. I have found that mpeg4-H.264 works great however if you don’t have QT, forget it. I’ve also noticed that some websites offer two versions of their movie clips, a Windows Media and a Quicktime version. And some with different file sizes for the same clips, Ex. Surfline.com in the video section. I assume I have the QT version covered with my current system.
    1. .wmv seems better than .avi, is this correct?
    2. In order to output a .wmv file with Flip4mac, can I just download the free version offered on their web site or should I purchase the $99 version?
3.Is it possible to create a .mpeg file for pc viewing with my system?
    Thanks ,Dean

You can use compressor to make an Mpeg-1 file. This is the most universal video file. All players can play it. It has been around the block. Not efficient codec but you get maximum penetration. For WMV files, if you have a PC get the free Microsoft encoder for WMV files. It’s PC only (free version) but if you have the PC, it’s a consideration. I would pay the $99 for Flip-4-mac. It’s worth it. The WMV files work well and look great. The third option is Flash. Very efficient but expensive and more difficult to deliver on the web side, I find. The self-contained formats of Mpeg, QT, and WMV have more appeal for distribution in my opinion.

    Hope this helps-
