    Hi All.

    flip video mino hd mp4’s into fcp 5.1 and then to you tube (in HD) –

    square pixels question.

    I have searched far and wide in creative cow, ken stone, and google and futzed and tested for many hours, and wanted to confirm that my workflow sounds coherent and ask a question about pixel aspect ratio for hd — square pixels in fcp sequence settings.

    When square pixels was not selected in FCP sequence settings there was slight letterboxing happening in timeline and final h264 export, with squishing/squishing to the image. This was when pixel aspect ratio was at ntsc ccir 601/dv. So, is selecting square pixel aspect ratio the answer when working with hd footage?

    This is my workflow:

    1. Indeed, clip settings should match sequence settings.
    2. Using mpeg streamclip I’m converting the flip video mino hd footage from original mp4 to — Export to other formats– Advanced formats (not 8 bit uncompressed as Rafael noted in another thread on this topic) –selecting HDV 720p30 as the compression type.
    3. in fcp my sequence settings are:

    frame size: 1280 x 720 hdtv 720p (16:9)
    pixel aspect ratio : square pixels
    anamorphic not checked
    field dominance: none or?
    quicktime video settings: hdv 720p30

    Then not using compressor but quicktime conversion to make the h264 QT for you tube etc.

    compression h264
    quality high
    bitrate 5000
    encoding mode multi pass
    dimensions: 1280 x 720

    Hi Robin,
    I think that the problem with the pixels is because you have selected HDV.
    HDV have HD pixels. Your “flip video mino hd” I guess uses Square pixels.
    You started with them, just stick with them. Computers have Square pixels. Web videos need to be Square pixels.

    About the field order, your original footage is Progressive. keep it like that. Everything to be watched in a computer needs to be Progressive.

    Also if you export to a QT movie, if you don’t want to go to 8/10b or process, don’t go to HDV. Is another big re-compression.
    Think that you start with the “flip video mino”, then HDV, the H264 for YouTube. Then YouTube will re-compress it again.

    The original mp4 has these specs:

    format: h.264 decoder 1280 X720
    FPS 30
    Data rate 10.37
    normal size: 1280 x 720
    current size: 1280 x 720 (actual)

    Then I”m using mpeg streamclip to convert to QT to bring into FCP.

    Rafael, thanks for telling me to use Progressive.

    I’m sorry but I am not sure I understand your answer.

    Considering the above specs, should I use HDV 720p30 in mpeg streamclip? If not, what should I use? and then should I use square pixels in the sequence settings since I am dealing with HD footage? I’m wondering if my workflow is correct. I’m testing one clip before I do all of them and I”m excited about getting going on the edit.

    Hi Robin,
    Just keep all the specs of the original movie changing only the codec.
    Go 1280 x 720, Progressive, Square pixels.
    Select a good codec if you want to transcode with good quality: 8/10b Unc or Proress.

    When you import the clips to FC, edit in a sequence with the same specs. You won’t need to render.

    Don’t go to HDV. HDV is avery compressed format and do not use Square pixels. If you want to export your movie to HDV keeping the same aspect ratio, you would need go to 960×720.

    Hi,
    I am new to the Flip HD camera and am confused as to how to edit the footage that it produces. I have used quick time pro to convert the footage to a .mov file and have used imovie and final cut pro to edit the clips, my issue now now is how do I export the file back to a HD file, using either imovie, Final Cut Express, Final Cut Pro, etc.

    Unfortunately,

    Your response has very little help in it editing from these different capture devices into FCP 2 or 3 which Apple clearly claimed in their false sales pitch that “FCP 2 was a multi-cam editing for cutting video from multiple camera sources” (wikipedia)

    Apple should have to reconcile these clearly false claims for all of us that have spent many many hours trying to get a program whose maker said their program could “fix” these format issues, but in truth offered no explanation except hour long rendering process’s for short clips regardless of your machines speed (Mac Pro 64 gig 3.2 8 processor). If we are going to continue paying these prices for these programs, WE have to demand better updates, programs, and explanations from the corporations that make these annoying but necessary products on how to solve these problems without an expensive work around.

    Figure it out Apple, and FIX IT FOR FREE. Then you won’t have a lawsuit on your hands.
