Has anyone used a “Flip MinoHD camera” footage within Premiere Pro?
I have a client that wants to give me video from one of these cameras and was wondering how easy or hard it is to edit with?

    Thanks!

Buy Quicktime Pro and install it on another machine that does not have Premiere on it.

You’ll also need to borrow the guy’s Flip and install it’s drivers on the machine, or Quicktime won’t be able to open it, it’s an exceedingly proprietary software.

Open the files from the Flip in Quicktime Pro, and then save them out as .mov files, take that into Premiere and edit to your heart’s content.

Only workflow I know of for this device unless you edit inside the Flip’s own software (which makes Windows Moviemaker look like Premiere). . .

Important note. The reason I recommend installing both QTPro and the Flip software/drivers on a separate machine is that shortly after doing this on my work machine, I lost the option to capture HDV from Premiere. I have absolutely no idea if that caused it, but as my other Premiere workstation continued plugging along fine and the only differences in the software were the QTPro install and the Flip, I am highly suspicious. Removing the Flip didn’t help, ultimately I had to reinstall the entire Adobe stack, which corrected it, but something to beware of.

    Larry,

Thank you for the detailed information about using the Flip video. It worked great and couldn’t have done it without your tips. Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you and let you know that it all turned out okay.

    Cheers!

No problem. It’s good to have some external validation for the method. Feel free to pass it on to anyone else with a similar issue. -R

Do either of you have any suggestions for rendering premiere pro projects based on flipcam footage? I am working on my first premiere pro project and so I just may not know the trick, but my 4.5 minute video has yet to fully render. If I try to render the full project it quotes about 1.5 hours to fully render and then freezes up partway through. I have had some success rendering about 1 minute of the project, but the output is fuzzy on my computer screen (although I have not tried it from a projector – would it look better that way?) The settings I am using are: Quicktime, Codec H264 and 70% quality. Tips? Thoughts?

    Thanks – Amanda

What your describing could have a number of causes. Please give me some additional information and I’ll see if I can suggest something:

    1. What version of Premiere Pro are you using?
    2. What are your computer specifications (hardware and operating system)?
    3. How are you trying to render out this file?

There’s also always the basic questions of “is there enough space on your drive”, “did you try saving the file and rebooting” etc.

Please note that I work on Windows and haven’t touched a Mac in 15 years. I can give you some basic advice but if it’s a Mac platform I’m not going to be able to offer any specifics. -R
