    Hi All

I’m working on a 3D fly through (AE CS3) and I’ve done a couple of renders in which shadows flicker and/or create scan lines. I’ve already turned off the casts/accepts lights/shadows for layers that don’t require them, but I still have some layers where I need the lights and/or shadows that are causing issues.

I’ve played with the light itself, as well as the shadow map resolution, I’ve tried turning on and off OpenGL but am still unable to solve the problem. It appears on both normal 3D layers, video and precomposed 3D comps (even if I adjust the shadow map resolution in the precomp).

It’s a problem I’ve seen before but I’ve always managed to eliminate the shadows/lights rather than solving the actual problem. Are there other settings or tools I can use to reduce the artefacting or is there a work around for this? Anyone else found the same problem or know what causes it?

Other posts here don’t seem to get to the bottom of the issue. Thanks in advance for any help…

P.S. Running on 2.16GHz MacBook Pro with 2GB SDRAM.

A, another one having these problems!
I’ve been posting about this some time ago, and noone seems to know
neither the problem, nor it’s solution
    And it’s easy to get into these problems;
Just constructing a cube with some solid layers, a light and a camera
when turning the cube or fly around with the camera, shadow-artifacts appear.
I came to the conclusion it’s an aftereffects-bug, and my workaround until further notice
is cinema 4d for these kinds of compositions

Thanks Dave, but no, the problem occurs on shadows casted by and on images, vector and otherwise as well as sub comps both 3D and otherwise. It’s kind of an artefact of the shadow gradient that causes the scan lines.

And yes, I’ve found a few more discussion on here since posting this (always the way!) and none of them seem to get to the bottom of the issue.

Found this link which shows a good example of the problem on a post (hope he doesn’t mind):

If it’s a bug, does anyone what causes it? In fact if anyone knows anything we don’t, then please let us know!

    Hi Simon,

I had this shadow-artefact problem aswell. From my experiences it seems this has to do with:
    – Layers in comps and subcomps that have that have a different comopsit mode then Normal (e.g.: Difference, Ad or Multiply)
    – Layer Styles
    – Distance of the light source to the objects

Nativ shadows always goes funny when one or more of the points listed occure. There might even be some others like effects or the enhencment of vector graphics (using the little switch with the star on ai-layers in the timeline)

I hope you can understand all of this because I am working on a german version of After Effects and I just know a few things in english on this software.
