Flicker on animated text with glow
Posted by Mack Truck on July 3, 2006 at 3:41 pmI animated the tracking amount of a text layer (text tool) and added some glow. The text looks fine, but the glow (AE Glow) is flickering. I have tried with other filters (Boris Glow, Trapcode StarGlow…) but I always get that flicker whatever I do. Any idea ?

July 3, 2006 at 3:47 pmTurn the layer to full quality.
Precompose your text layer, THEN add the glow to the precomp.
These two solutions spring to mind.

July 3, 2006 at 4:19 pmI have tried that but it did work. Even with the traditionnal Text filter 🙁
When you composite only the glow, it looks like it uses a very different pattern every frame, hence the flicker.
The only workout I have tried to far is to add an channel blur on the alpha. -

July 3, 2006 at 5:03 pmDid you try rendering the text, re-importing it, then adding the glow?

July 3, 2006 at 5:04 pmMaybe you are just using a less than ideal typeface? If so, try to find a different weighting of the same font. If that’s not an option, add another instance of Glow before your actual glow, but make it the color of your font and use it in “normal” mode. Make it very thing and increase the strength, but make sure it still looks feathered. That may give you just the 1 pixel thickness around your text that you may need to minimize flicker.

July 3, 2006 at 5:39 pmPre-rendering did not help. I have tried that with a common typefaces.
Try this: add text, animate the tracking, add the glow filter. Composite only the glow (composite original=none and glow operation=none). RAM preview that animation: it looks OK. Then change Glow Based on=Alpha. RAM preview again: it looks terrible !! -

July 3, 2006 at 7:05 pmThen how about two layers: glow only, and text only?
By the way, are you on AE 6.0? It had slightly dodgy text behaviour.

October 30, 2009 at 5:19 amPrecompose the text (you don’t have to, it is just easier to edit later), duplicate it, add a Gaussian Blur to the bottom layer, add your glow with ‘Composite Original’ to NONE and ‘Glow Operation’ to NONE under the blur. Mess with the amount of blur until it looks right.
I currently have the same problem and am playing with separate horizontal and vertical blurs so as to alter the finished look as little as possible by blurring less, so far doing a horizontal blur of about 1 is mostly working.
