  • Flicker / blinking problem in preview window after processor upgrade

Posted by Chris Estrada on August 3, 2012 at 5:06 pm

Hi there, been a while since I posted here. I’ve searched for people with similar problems but have not found any that match.

I took a long break from video editing but during that break I’ve upgraded my processor to a hex-core to better facilitate it (and everything else I do..) than the old duel-core processor I had. And indeed, it now kicks butt on the render times.

However, it’s introduced a weird problem in the preview window where it flickers out (almost kind of a blinking effect) while playing back, making it REALLY annoying to work on anything longer than a few minutes. Good thing I don’t suffer from epilepsy or I would probably be in the hospital by now.

I tried changing the settings on the preview window and the problem improved by switching to “Draft (Quarter)” or possibly “Draft (Half)”… but, obviously, it looks pretty bad. My system could handle the preview window in top quality with my crappy dual-core processor, so why am I having a problem now?

Since I have a feeling there is probably a very simple explanation from one of the knowledgeable people here, and probably just a system preference I need to change in the program (I hope!) – I am posting this here.

    System info:
    Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
    Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
    Model GA-MA785GT-UD3H
    Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1100T Processor, 3315MHz
    Total Memory 8192MB
    Display ASUS VH238, 23.1” (51cm x 29cm)
    NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
BIOS is in ACPI mode in case that matters

Do you see this same flicker during playback of videos in
your media players ?…(Vlc, windows media player, quicktime, etc)

Vegas 11, sorry for leaving that out!

No, the rendered videos seem okay, although I haven’t made that many since coming back to the program. Also, if I play a file in the TRIM window, there is no problem at all. It just flickers in the main preview window.

I’m not using any effects either. I’m using Vegas just for editing ethnographic-style videos of performances for my research, and the fanciest “effect” I use is usually just crossfading. But I don’t even have any crossfades set at this point

Right mouse click in the actual preview window and remove the tick next to Adjust Size and Quality for Optimal playback.

BINGO!!!!! that seems to have solved it, thank you so much Mr. Nigel!

I would have thought that changing the settings from the drop-down menu would have automatically unchecked that box which I heretofore did not know about.

Sorry for the noob-ish post, I appreciate the quick responses

I seem to have same image flickering problem if I activate GPU acceleration in Video preference settings. Image fine if preview on external monitor activated. I have tried your suggestion of 04/08/2012 but that makes no difference. Preview monitor fine if I switch off GPU acceleration, but if I then use preview on external monitor it is jerky and out of sync and sometimes impossible to return to non preview on external monitor status. Any suggestion gratefully received. Using Vegas Pro 12 with 2 NVidia cards – GTX 520 and 580. Windows 7 64 bit. Here’s some more info if that helps:

[paul cox] “Using Vegas Pro 12 with 2 NVidia cards – GTX 520 and 580”

May I ask why you are using 2 video cards? The 580 is a dual head video card. If you need 3 monitors, I would have matched the video cards. The problem may be with your video card drivers being slightly different.

[paul cox] “sometimes impossible to return to non preview on external monitor status”

Are you saying you cannot disable the external monitor? Which video card is connected to the 520 and which is connected to the 580? Have you tried running both monitors off the 580 only or removing the 520 from your system?

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 12 (x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

    Thanks for replying.
There are 2 graphics cards to run Resolve light. The 520 for GUI and 580 for rendering. I think you must be right that Vegas is confused by having 2 cards. Latest update from Vegas allows me to choose which card to use which has improved things but not completely solved problem. As Vegas seems to preview fine with GPU disabled I think I’ll just live with that.

    Thanks again
