    Hi guys –

Can anyone recommend flat acreen/LCD monitors that would be good for motion design, esp for Motion? I have been reluctant to go LCD because of I heard that they did manage colour and motion as well as CRTs. Is this true? I’ve been checking out the ViewSonics, Lacies, NECs and Dells, but all those factors left my head spinning. I am particularly concerned about how well they handle motion, so there won’t be any ghosts or artefacts.

    Thanks…later.

If you want to see the second field, you will need a CRT. I have a whole tape that has been sent to me with the field order rendered wrong, looks very nasty.

LCD’s are nice but if your work is going to end up on video, buy yourself a decent CRT

    Thanks, Peter!

I enjoyed your review of Motion, which convinced me to consider Motion and the switch to Mac even more. When are you going to do a review of M2 for us newbies?

Bak to the question though: what decent CRTs are there? What do you use? How comes LCDs dont show the second field?

I am looking into CRTs because of space and some horrid fluctuations that I am curently getting (I think it’s something with these AOCs).

Glad you liked the review. I was going to do a review of M2, but there wasn’t really a whole lot more in 2 than 1, especially under Panther. One addition I do like though is being able to toggle the broadcast monitor on/off without having to dive into the prefs. Customise your icon bar to get this feature – well it was requested!

Most LCD’s don’t show the second field, so you will only see half of your output! One manufacturer is trying to make an ‘interlacing emulator” although I haven’t tried it. Bad contrast ratios and lag make LCDs a bad choice for final reference, you will need a CRT.

I’ve got a Sony Grade 1 SDI monitor fed from a Decklink card – although this might seem overkill, nearly all my work is for broadcast, so it has to be spot on. Cheaper options would be firewire out through a camera to a monitor etc.

Re the review: well I wanted to get more info on the replicator, new filters, animation tools and the improved integration with AE…though Apple does do a fair review on their site, I suppose. I thought you’d be on Tiger by now, which is partly why I asked. In fact, as a newbie I would really want you to do that review…hint hint…;)

Re mobnitors: so the 650-800:1 contrast ratio is that bad? I definitely understand the need to get the broadcast monitor for final reference so the Sony and the Decklink are a go for me.

So I should work on CRTs? Drat, iwas looking forward to losing the bulky wretches. Since I am a PC user, what CRTs work well on Macs? I am getting my list of items together to make the famous ‘switch’.

Not quite sure what he is asking about? Motion works fine on my 22″ Cinema Display”, I suppose if you are wanting to “see” what it looks like on a standard television set witha CRT display, then a second CRT viewable through a capture card or over the Firewire connected deck.

What is wrong with an Apple HD display for viewing video on or motion on?

right, mr video…that’s what i was getting at…are there any other LCD/flatscreen monitors that work well outside of the apple cinema displays?

I’ve become a big fan of the Dells. Not as pretty but for around $550 for a 20″ and a 24″ for just over $1000. It’s a great buy. As if you have an NTSC monitor for critical preview, it’s completely safe to edit with an LCD.

Check out dealmac.com and search for dell lcd.
