Flashing Lights & Text Effects

If you look at the above video at 2:15 it shows a picture that get’s 4 flashing red lights overlaid on top, and I have no idea how he created this.
He also, at 0:56, has a cool text effect where he gets the text to flash.
Can these effects be done in Vegas? He used Premiere to create these effects…

You can easily do this in Vegas using Red solid generate media and a mask. The flashing is just a quick fade on and off. Since the original light was green, he may have even placed red media on the track below and used chroma key to key out the green revealing the red (that’s the first thing I would try). The text looks like it might just be a glow setting that is keyframed to be on and off. Nothing I can see in that video requires Premiere to do.

About the mask generator, where would I find a way shape the red block into a red light? I.e. what mask generator do I use and how do I control what it masks?

Actually that was “using” a mask on generated media. To do this:
- Insert a Video Track on the timeline.
- Right-click the video track and select Insert Generated Media and choose Sony Solid Color and select the shade of red you would like.
- Click on Event Pan/Crop icon for the event you just made.
- Check the Mask checkbox and start clicking on the screen to draw the mask as a set of bezier curves.
- When you close the mask it will hide everything but the area you drew.
Look up “Mask, Bezier” in the Vegas help file for more info.
