Flash to Flash EDL export?
Posted by Chris Farrington on September 9, 2008 at 11:06 pmHi,
I’m trying to export and EDL from Final Cut Pro. I know that I can go to Export>EDL, but the effects house is asking for “flash to flash” info. Any ideas on how I go about that?
Thanks.

Flash to flash means film camera start to film camera stop. The efx house wants to know the start and end of each shot from camera, not from your timeline.
an EDL will tell them the exact frame each shot begins and ends in your timeline. The efx house wants the whole take so they can either cut it out and assemble it onto a select negative roll, or scan the whole take rather than just what you cut, to facilitate dissolves and such.
Ask them if all they really want is some “handle” like 2 or 3 seconds on either side of the editied shot. if thats all they need, there are a few ways to do that, and i think the easiest one is cinema tools (what you want is a pull list).
of course all of this is speculation based on my assumption of waht you asked. It would be valuable for myself and all contributors to this forum if you presented more information about the project, specifically your workflow.
other than how your parents conceived you, there is no such thing as too much information! 🙂

September 10, 2008 at 3:22 pmHey Bob,
THanks for the advice. The reason the post house asked for a flash to flash is we’re still in the early phases of cutting and he figured we could be changing the edits would change (but so could the takes so it was kind of a silly thing to ask for).
My solution was to create a new bin, select all the clips in the assembly in the timeline and drag them into that new bin. Then, I opened up each clip in the bin and removed the in and out points, then created a new sequence and dragged all those clips in at once from the bin. Then I exported an EDL of that sequence and got all the info I needed.
Thanks.

I was going to suggest that, but i thought that method would make a disconnect between your timeline and the footage ie when you make a timeline of the whole takes, you lose the in and out points of the cuts, and re-linking the 2 could prove difficult (at least in FCP)
however if they are looking for footage to use separately then thats the way to go
