  • Fixing Varicam 2 frame offset in FCP

A few ago there was a thread concerning the 2 frame audio/video offset caused by the varicam. We’re presently dealing with this problem and Leo gave the solution of simply resetting the audio and video offset at ingest. I can’t find where to access FCP’s offset control. I thought it would be in the capture preset or the device control preset settings, but to no avail. I have Leo’s post quoted below. Please help.

    Many thanks,
    neil

    Leo’s post:

This is why FCP has offset control. As I mentioned, we prefer to set this in FCP as material is ingested, then you are working with material in perfect sync through out the edit.

When the picture and rough audio are cut, we generally send a Quick Time to the Audio Suite for sweetening and music mixing. The audio Engineer returns the finished audio file which simply replaces the original audio tracks.

    Neil,

I doubt very much that there is an “offset control” per se, I know there is not one on the Avid, but you can easily “edit” the sound or picture by sliding two frames to correct the offset!

John, thanks for your input. I appreciate it; however, I should have been more clear. Your solution, of simply sliding the two frames into sync, is what our editors have been doing, and it’s simply too time consuming. I was really hoping there would be a way to correct the problem at ingest so we could avoid this tedious inconvenience. Again, thanks for your input.

    Neil,

Check your FCP installation disk and look in one of the folders where all the extra stuff that is not normally loaded is.

Somewhere in one of those folders is the item you will need to deal with the two frame offset issue.

As Tony said, in you FCP installation disk, there is an “Extras” folder.
In this folder you will find a Panasonic DVX-100 Audio Sync “thingy”. If you install this it will compensate for the slight loss of sync…

    Hey Tony,

I know this is coming long after you responded to my post, and I’m sorry for that. I’ve been out of town, and our machines have been too busy to do any testing. I wasn’t able to try your solution until earlier today, and you’re absolutely right! Thank you so much. You’ve really helped us out.

I am experiencing a 2 or 3 frame offset when I capture dvcpro tapes shot at 720p24 using a Panasonic HD1200A deck. Is there a way I can set an offset at the time of ingest, that way I have perfect sync throughout the edit process. I have tried the following two potential solutions to no avail…

Adding the Panasonic DVX-100 Audi Sync ‘extra’ did not solve the sync issue, which I suspected since I wasn’t using DV.

And it appears that adjusting the frame offset under the playback control in the system settings only helps by moving the audio forward ahead, which does not help because the audio is already ahead by two about two frames.

Steve, the audio sync extra that Tony informs me of further up in the thread works just fine for me. And, I’m not using DV either, but actually, 720p24 and a 1200A deck just like you are. The fact that’s it’s DV, I’m guessing has little to do with it. It’s still the same concept. I’ve captured plenty of this Varicam footage and it seems to work fine. It’s not perfect. It’d be great if it would actually effect the quicktime clip, instead of just the clip within the project. If you import the clip into a new prject instead of copying and pasting, you’ll lose the offset. I hope this helps, and you give the DVX-100 audio sync offset another try. Curious about how you introduce into your work flow.
