  • Fixing Flicker on a stop motion piece

I made this piece in a weekend about three years ago with a few friends. It was originally meant to be a simple proof of concept, but since we shot the whole thing at 18MP I recently decided to clean it up and make a proper showcase piece out of it.

Here is the original version of it before cleanup:
    Playdoh Commercial (old)

I made a clean plate and set it to reveal only what was needed, added in a 3D camera and did some basic camera animations, ending up with this:
    Playdoh Commercial (new rough)

My problem now is with the flicker around the mask for the Playdoh logo. I’ve done the work in multiple passes at this point

    1. Full image stack (4752 x 3168) as ProRes 422 HQ
    2. Cleanup pass with clean slate (same settings)
    3. Camera Animation / motion blur pass 1080P as ProRes 422 HQ

Ideally I’d like to clear the up the flicker during pass #2, but the one thing I’ve found that might work on it is Boris Continuum Complete’s Flicker Fixer, and that has a max resolution of 3,500 x 3,500. I attempted to use it in FCPX after pass 3, but it seems to flatten out a lot of the details. You can check it out here. I’m still working on animating the camera, so it’s a bit jerky in sections.

What I’m looking for is an FCPX or Motion plugin that can fix the flicker on very large scale (4752 x 3168), or just any ideas you guys might have in general on this. It doesn’t have to be a FCPX / Motion plugin, but those are what the works been done in so far.
