First time exporting for broadcast
Hi everyone! Before I get into this I just want to say I’ve lurked around the forums for years without an account and learnt so much so thank you all for your insight over the years. I’ve really appreciated it and hopefully once I get this resolved I’ll maybe be able to give back to the community too!
Now, onto my problem. I have just finished editing a music video for a local musician and delivered him the final file for playback on youtube (no problems here). He has now come back to me and wants to submit the video to MTV in the hope they pick it up and give him coverage. This is the first time I will have exported in any format other than H.264 as all of my deliverables to clients are for web use.
Upon checking MTV’s submission guidelines (https://www.mtvbase.com/info/video-submission-guidelines) I have discovered that my embarrassingly bad knowledge of formats and codecs has finally left me not quite sure of what to do.For those that don’t want to follow the link here’s the content:
VIDEO SPECIFICATIONS1. Format: (SD/HD) .mov
2. Codecs: Example – Apple pro res, XDCam EX, DV PAL and or XDCAM HD.
3. Frames per second: 25
4. Audio: Stereo
5. Data rate: 50Mbit/sec or higher
6. The following codecs are also acceptable:
• Apple Pro Res 422/ HQ
• XDCAM HD422 1080i 50 (50mb/s)
• XDCAM HD720p25 (50mb/s)
• MPEG IMX 625/50 (50mb/s)
• DV PAL
• HDV 1080i50
• HDV 720p25
• DVCPRO 50 PALI run Adobe Premiere Pro on Windows, so unfortunately I can’t take the easy option and choose to render it out as a Quicktime in ProRes 422. I have also been through almost every conceivable option in the export settings to try and find something that works, however some of these settings appear to change the aspect ratio and lock it without me being able to change it back to square pixels or a ratio of 16:9
If anyone has any suggestions or can shed any light on this I would be greatly appreciative!

Hire someone to do this. Sorry, but it’s not as simple as exporting the proper codec. Shows destined to be aired need to meet a lot of criteria, including meeting very specific video levels (cannot go too bright, nor too dark), and simply slapping a BROADCAST SAFE filter doesn’t always work. Audio levels also need to meet certain specifications…they have loudness limitations.
The knowledge it takes to deliver to networks is something an Online Editor would have. The band will need to hire someone with that skillset to deliver the show properly. Otherwise you risk getting it rejected.

For Export Settings
Format: MXF OP1a
Preset: XDCAM HD 50 PAL 50iall the defaults can be left as is.
This does not bypass the concern that Shane states.

To be honest this was something that was kind of just thrown onto me so I will be passing the musician onto someone who knows what they’re doing.
Thanks for the settings though! I’ll render that out and deliver it before I pass them on to someone.

Thanks for the info! I’ll pass that onto the band as I thought that would be the case.
It was a last minute decision on their part as if I had known at the beginning that was their intention I would’ve sent them along that path.
