Just wanted to start in on this before the bandwagon starts tomorrow. Lion is set to hit the shelves (or App Stores….) Tomorrow, and it is probably going to suck.

It may not suck as much as FCPX has to some of you, but nonetheless, it will probably suck some. For others, the general suckiness of this update may not be so sucky. We’ll see.

Anyway, I think it would be wise to leave it alone. Let us all learn a lesson from FCPX experience, and wait a couple of updates before we dive in. There seems to be some fantastic new elements heading in Lion, and I’m really excited for them. But I also know that it will suck.

It’s fun being an early adopter and all, but I for one am waiting for the initial kinks to work out before heading over to the new digs.

    First!

I would not dream of putting it on a production machine.

But I will certainly try it out in the next few weeks as I have time. Just like I am trying FCPX on non production machines.

So far I really like FCPX, though it is not yet ready for prime time. I am experimenting with it. I think in a year or so it will b very good and I bet Lion will be great as well.

So far every Apple major change (with a very few exceptions) has been great, but it usually takes a while to be ready for serious work. Like all other SW/HDW I have used in the last 4 decades.

    Why be so negative?

Most of us probably have a bunch of old SATA drives hanging around and on a Mac Pro at least it’s easy to swap out the drive, so I might install it on a separate drive and check it out like that. But yeah there’s no way I’ll put it on my main system right now.

I’ve been using Lion for months on our laptops. Ironically, when I have to go to Snow Leopard, I find myself mildly annoyed. I was never a big fan of spaces, but I really like the whole dashboard/launchpad/expose thing now. I’ll be interested to see how it works though with a dual 27 cinema display setup – especially fullscreen apps.
It’s a pleasant evolutionary step from SL rather than the Revoltalution of FCPX. I don’t advise anyone update anything until they’ve confirmed their favorite applications are compatible with it. Really.

May I suggest that you take a peek at my tutorial on just this very subject. The main difference being that I show you how to setup multiple bootable partitions on a single drive so that you can simply boot between the operating systems and versions of FCP like there’s no tomorrow.

I may check that out. I do know how to make new partitions but maybe not how to add a new partition to an existing one. In any case I have it set up with bootcamp on my system drive and think I won’t mess with that. But I really don’t see much point in playing with Lion right now anyway.

Thank you Matt, but what happened to the PR job I hired you to do? Did somebody else promise you more and better tacos?

Upgrading a production machine with 1.0 os, software or whatever is never a smart thing.
    Thats nothing new with Lion.

I wonder where we stand with clonable drives with Lion?? I for one relly like the way we can back up complete OS drives with CCC.
