    Hi Guys

I’m in a hospital setting and we have a demo of some HD kit tomorrow and the following day on our surgical lasers and operating microscopes. (1080/50i)

I’ve just been informed of it and we have no HD kit ourselves. The guys are bringing a separate head (C-mount)camera (HD SDI out) and a monitor.

I’ve had to hire a recorder (Pana HD1200) for the two days and was hoping to be able to capture some of the HD DVCPro footage into my Mac (specs should be okay, FCP 5.04) at the end of the session. The recorder is fitted with a firewire output and I was hoping this will do more that just downconverted SD.

If HD footage can be transfered over the FW what format will it be, I should have thought FW400 too slow for this?

    Thank you for any help.

It will be full DVCPro HD. Just make sure it’s not set up to downconvert the footage to SD on the way out. Default is HD.

We edit / master using the Firewire workflow all day, every day and we just started a new project that’s being shot 1080i / 50 HDV and then being mastered to the 1200A via HD-SDI. Looks absolutely stunning.

    Another question??

If I start this HD DVCPro tape workflow (Recording times too long for P2, and I’m a little wary of the FireStore at present)will I need a card for the Mac like the Decklink or something? Currently I’m all SD and I use the excellent AJA IO.

    Thanks again,

    Alan

For ingest and editing, no. If you want to playback HD on an external monitor, yes.

if you plan to master this to HD, I would strong suggest an HD card like the AJA Kona series. You can’t truly color correct HD unless you’re viewing it on a true HD monitor from an HD card.

    Thanks again Walter,

I had no idea HD DVCPro was potentially so easy via the firewire etc. I guess I’ll start experimenting with an HVX200 and see where it takes me.

Definitely get a card and monitor. Do you happen to know if the appropriate Kona cards will cohabitate with the IO on the same box?

I’m really looking forward to this.

AND Blu-ray and HD DVD by the end of the year in tghe UK!!

Absolutely, they’re designed to work together. We run an Io LA on our systems for the occassional Component Analog Inputs. You can capture via the Kona and output to the Io or vice versa for SD work.
