I am editing my first project for broadcast, a :60 spot shot in 720/60. The spot will first be aired in SD, then HD later next year when the channel in question moves to HD broadcast.

My question is this – will the 16×9 master automatically center cut everything for 4×3 TV or can broadcasters send a letterboxed version for 4×3 TVs?

If so, does that mean I’m safe so long as I’m within title safe for the 16×9?

If not, is there a way to see 4×3 safe within a 16×9 FCP timelne?

That’s kind of what I thought, but having not cut for broadcast before I thought it best to ask first. And thanks for the plug-in tip; that should be things much easier.

Broadcasters centre cut everything (as far as I’m aware) so you need to ensure that graphics are within 4×3 safe area. There’s a psd with these guides available somewhere on the BBC website, and also if you check out https://web.me.com/andymees you’ll find a great plug in that will generate various guides over your video.

No problem, and good luck with it. HD editing is more-or-less exactly the same as SD, just takes longer to render etc.
One thing to bear in mind when you need to output this as HD is that I believe (and you should check with the broadcasters for confirmation) they would expect 1080, not 720 as their HD resolution. Kona products do the cross-conversion in realtime straight into whatever HD deck and monitor you use and with excellent results. However, it’s a 60″ spot so chances are you’ll be able to deliver digitally. If that’s the case then as I say, check what the broadcaster expects, as you may find you need to up/cross convert to 1080, which can be done using Compressor and other software if you don’t have a Kona card.

Thanks Alex. I bought the Kona3 card with upconversion in mind. This will be my first opportunity to use that feature, so I’m kind of looking forward to it.

Thanks again for the quick response.
