This may be of interest to anyone looking at getting a Letus 35mm adaptor to use with their EX cam. This was our first go with the EX3 and adaptor. Tony Brennan was the DoP.

I’ve directed past TVC’s on the SDX900 and HVX200 but we gave the EX a go this time and I was really impressed with the detail and sharpness of the images. The YouTube compression is a bit noisy and with artifacts but it’s not too bad. The original is much cleaner.

I’m looking at getting a small camera to go with the Letus and it is down to the HPX170 or EX3, but I’m leaning towards the EX3.

For me the choice starts at the front end of the camera, and when adding a 35mm lens adapter the choice is even easier to choose the larger 1/2 sensors that come with the Sony EX camera. Now if you add the Convergent Design Nano Flash HD-SDI recorder you will really take full advantage of what the front end can deliver.

I haven’t used the Letus and wondered if you used there new relay lens directly on the EX3?

    Good Luck

very nice.. a real “pro” production… I can see the EX3 potential on the right hands and I’m happy I get one … maybe the DOF adapter can come later for me…

    kind regards

    Hi Michael,

No I haven’t used the relay. I am interested in Evangelos’ 2/3″ relay that he is developing; not due until November. It’s interesting with different cameras and 25mm adaptors. I just did this cheapie music video on a Canon A1 with the Letus and it came up pretty good for such a small camera.

I think web use smooths out a lot of differences between cameras. When you are producing broadcast material like commercials or docos that’s when you get what you pay for.

Your EX TVC looks great but I agree, Peter, that you need to view footage on full scale monitor to make proper judgement.

My big question is what lenses did you use? I’ve been shooting docos and TVCs with the EX1 and Letus Elite but am struggling with a little bit of vignetting, especially in low light. Mostly I shoot with a couple of zooms but wondering about hiring Zeiss lenses for upcoming TVC.

    Hi Mickey.

Tony used Nikon primes on the shoot. I think they were 28mm, 35mm 50mm and 85mm. I use Zeiss Contax lenses with my own Letus Ultimate because I like the way they focus in the same direction as cine lenses, their long focus throw and for their fantastic build, quality and consistency.

I get some vignetting with the Zeiss 28mm lens. You can see it on the music video clip; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-njdhiRncg&fmt=22

But because it is a music clip it doesn’t really matter – adds to it really. I wouldn’t want vignetting on a doco. Apparently the larger the rear diameter of the lens the less likely you will see vignetting.

I think that looks fantastic… I am working on a spot right now with the Letus… primarily with Nikkor 50mm f1.2… I feel like I have died and gone to heaven because of the great image control.

I will post when it is done… and I would love to see other Letus shoots if anyone has them to share.
