Firewire/LaCie problems – could it be Tiger?
Posted by Godfrey Pye on May 22, 2005 at 1:12 pmNot exactly FCP – but. I have three Macs, a G5 Tower, G5 iMac, a Mac Mini. I also have a LaCie 500gig Big Disk which has always worked wonderfully on all of ’em – until this week when I installed Tiger. Coincidence? I wonder.
I have tried everything I know, Permissions Repair, left the LaCie to rest overnight, bought new cables, tried all the combos I could, 400 to 800 firewire (for the Mini) and 800 to 800 firewire – the Big Disk does not appear on any of the desktops.
Has anyone else had a problem with LaCie and Tiger?Mike Mihalik replied 20 years, 11 months ago 5 Members · 9 Replies -

May 22, 2005 at 1:44 pmNot sure what’s happening, but I have several d2 LaCie disks, and they all work fine. There was some firmware updates a long time ago for the 800 disks I ran (probably still posted on LaCie’s site). Have you run those?

May 22, 2005 at 2:14 pmJerry, I tried the LaCie site, it refers to Driver vers 1.1.2 which was posted on April 8, sounds like that may be the one for me. Trouble is, it’s no longer on the site, they refer to it – but I can’t see it.
So I guess I’ll ask them if they can send it to me.
Many thanks,

I suggest that you first try to reset your FireWire ports.Follow these instructions to reset the FireWire ports in your computer from this Apple Technote:
https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
The LaCie Update Tool v1.3.2 is still on the wbsite at https://www.lacie.com/support/drivers; simply make sure you have the Hard Drive product family, and scroll down the list.
Direct link is:
https://www.lacie.com/download/drivers/LaCieUpdateTool.dmgApple advises that FireWire peripherals be disconnected before performing system updates to prevent this type of proble.
Finally, after performing these steps, make sure that drive is visible within Apple System Profiler in the FireWire section, and that it is also visible within Disk Utility.

May 22, 2005 at 7:52 pmalso , call lacie tech support. We just bought two d2 250 fw drives and one of them kept dismounting on its own. i went ot he website and downloaded the newest drivers. The program checked the drives and said”Drives are up to date”
when i finally got through to lacie, they said to disregard the message and force the update by holding option key down and running the program.
the drivers were old and this replaced them, but in the end it still kept dismounting and i had to send it back. They must be having ALOT of calls about d2, as the techie ran through the checklist much too quickly. -

May 22, 2005 at 9:02 pmOver here in the UK, lacie drives have a 2 year warranty. Might be a silver lining.

With the additional info provided that other FireWire peripherals are OK, then you are likely right that the drive is D E A D.
Quite strange that the failure coincides with Tiger upgrade, as there is nothing in the Tiger update that should do this.
Does Apple System profiler report anything regarding the drive?
You may want to continue this dialog by sending me an email to:
“firewire at lacie dot com” – just make it look like a real email address before sending the message on to me.Mike
