Firewire voice Over tool
Posted by Chris Anderson on August 31, 2009 at 1:44 pmHi I’m trying to record a vo using the voice over tool. I have an xlr mic connected to a sony Z1 in record mode connected via firewire. The voice over tool is set to dv and using first two channels.
It doesn’t register any levels and records a very low signal.Any idea?
Thanks Chris

August 31, 2009 at 1:48 pmGo into your System Preferences > Sound and see if you can adjust the Input level to be higher. We can do that with our USB mics here.

Yeah, I was afraid of that since you’re coming through a camera, it’s just a digital signal, no separation on the Mic.
Might look at your camera and see if you can boost the audio level there.
Also, does your Mic require phantom power? If so, that would account for the really low audio levels if the camera can’t supply that. Our AKG 200 for example requires phantom power which the Mackie audio boards provide.

August 31, 2009 at 2:50 pmThere’s a switch for each input on the z1u for phantom power if needed, right next to the xlr connection. Switch the camera mic volume control to manual, and boost the volume there.

August 31, 2009 at 8:57 pmThanks guys. I’m just using a shure SM58 plus the levels and sound are great on the camera.
It also works when I’m in the capture tool. The odd thing is it does work when I record the VO, it just does not register any levels on the VO tool meter. Thanks again,
