[eyecamiam] “could anyone recommend a firewire hub that would work well with multiple computers?”

What do you mean by “multiple computers?”

[eyecamiam] “Also could anyone recommend a firewire hub that would work well with multiple computers?”

If you’re looking to tie multiple computers together with one firewire hub, that doesn’t work. You can tie computers together with an ethernet hub, but not Firewire.

You can purchase Firewire Switches where if you have one Firewire VTR and you want to be able to switch it from computer to computer for control, but you can’t have a fully active Firewire hub on multiple computers.

What I am thinking is to have a VTR connected to a “switcher” so that we can insert a tape and without plugging and unplugging firewire cables be able to import/export. Yes to any one computer at a time. Just trying to eliminate the possible damage to firewire ports/wires that constant plugging and unplugging can create. Is this a good idea? Any switcher you can recommend? How many computers can be connected to this switcher? Of course the longer firewire cables are expensive

You are looking for a “firewire patchbay”

If you do a search you will find several of these. B&H sells them (kind of expensive though.) If you e-mail me I’ll send you a link to a company that sells them for under $150 (Don’t have the link handy.)

[walter biscardi] “You can tie computers together with an ethernet hub, but not Firewire.”

Just so everyone is clear. If you take two computers, and connect a firewire cable between the two, in Windows XP, Both computers will automatically connect to each other. I do it all the time to quickly transfer from my laptop to my desktop. Windows will even create a “network notification” in the system tray just like a typical network connection.
