  • FireWire problem with Sony GV-D1000 “walkman” deck

    Hi all,

I am having a problem where FCP isnt recognizing my VTR (a Sony GV-D1000 walkman) via the firewire. This is a powerbook setup running FCP 4.5 with a firewire connection to the VTR through a Lacie external FW drive. It used to work fine, however, lately I have been using a Sony FX-1 HDV camera as the vtr, and now when I return to the little deck, it isnt recognized.

It is a firewire problem I believe because as soon as I plug the deck in, I get a spinning beachball whenever I try to access my Lacie external firewire drives.

If I disconnect the external FW harddrive and connect the VTR directly to the Powerbook it still does not work. I also tried to connect this little VTR to a G5 desktop with the same result. FCP would not recognize it and it caused other FW devices to have strange problems.

How does one go about troubleshooting a FW problem like this?

First, go into the D1000’s menu and scroll down to “A/V>DV OUT” and make sure it is in the “OFF” condition.

If it IS in the OFF condition and you still can’t get the FW connection to work, then it sounds like the jack in the back of the deck may be damaged (probably a bad internal connection due to “plugging and unplugging”).

To make sure this is the problem, just connect your camcorder (make sure to set the camcorder to output at DV, not HDV), or any other DV camcorder, to the deck via a FireWire cable and play a tape in the camcorder.
If the FW connection on the D1000 is OK, the deck will show the output from the camcorder on its screen.
If not (and you’re SURE its not a bad FW cable) then you either have a bad FW jack on the deck, or the deck has a bad internal FW section.
In either case, you’ll need Sony Service to repair it. ($$$).

I too am having the same problem with Sony’s GV – D1000 however, Final Cut Pro won’t recognize my GL2 either. It says VTR OK and I can even play my devices remotely from the program but there is no video feed on the monitor. I moved over to my PC and attempted to capture using the same devices on Adobe’s Premiere Pro 1.5, and I had nothing but success. Final Cut Pro 5 seems to be having some issues with the capture feature and as much as I hate to capture with Premiere Pro 1.5, I have no choice now. Is there something not set properly perhaps on Final Cut Pro because I have followed three different textbooks on the proper way to set up for a capture and still there is no success.
My Canon GL2 does not lock up my G5(8GB Ram/ Dual 2.7) when I engage it remotely with Final Cut, however The Sony GV-D100 does. Any ideas???….

I troubleshot this problem last night for about 3 more hours and solved it!!!!!, The whole time I was connected via 6-pin firewire to the front-side port of my G5, apparrently the G5 cannot capture video through the front side(I know it shocked me too.) Anyhow, I disconnected from the from the front side firewire port and connected to the rear side fire wire port instead and “Viola!” I now have preview mode enabled in final cut pro 5. I know you guys are probably wondering, “Well buddy, it sounds like your front-side firewire port is fried…” Actually. No….I connected every kind of thing besides video cameras and video decks and I had no problems, My Ipod 60GB updates just fine through there, My G-raid hard drive works fine through there also….So unless I only managed to “half-fry” the front side firewire port, it seems that the G5 and Final Cut Pro 5 are picky about which port you capture from. I hope this information solves some of your problems guys. “Peace and a Happy New Year to all of you!” -Indigo
