  • Firewire -> P2 Card Adapter and DVCPRO 1080p preview

Posted by Joerg on January 8, 2007 at 3:01 pm

    Hi there,

Currently we copy the P2 cards with my G4 Powerbook on external bus powered harddrives while shooting on set.
As I would like the use the Set Computer as field monitor as well, using Scopebox or a similar product and the G4 is definetly too slow for 1080p preview via firewire I am considering an upgrade to an Intel Macbook or Pro.
But I still would want to be able to copy P2 cards with the same computer. While there is already a solution to use P2 cards via adater on the Macbook Pro Express Cars Slot, I was wondering, if there is a solution to Import P2 Cards via Firewire. This way we could use a basic Macbook on Set and save around 1000$.
    Any ideas anyone?

    Thanks,
    Joerg

For what it’s worth, it isn’t the computers speed that is the determining factor here, it is the firewire drive. Bus powered drives run at 5400RPM, enough for DV but not for DVCPRO HD. Connecting that drive to a MacBook Pro will not make it able to play back 1080i footage.

    thanks shane,

this may be right for capturing, but I am only talking about recording on P2 cards, while previewing (for focus and exposure) on the Computer with Scopebox. HDD performance should not be an issue there. It’s more a CPU thing i guess.

The bus powered drives are only used for copying the data from the P2 cards.

    Thanks Jeremy,

I was hoping there is a single pcmcia card adapter solution in the 100$ range.
Guess I have to wait a bit for that.

For the moment it locks like the Macbook Pro and the Duel systems ExpressCard->PCMCIA Adapter ist the best solution.

    You and everyone else, man.

Concerning the MacBook vs MacBook Pro, your money is best spent on the MBPro as you can then use it to edit/preview as well in FCP.

5400RPM is fast enough to play back 1080, it may depend on other factors but on my Core 2 Duo 2.00GHz laptop with 5400 RPM SATA drive it plays back 1080/60i, 1080/24p, and 1080/30p in full-screen without a hitch.

    I stand corrected.

Now is there any other way I can get my foot into my mouth?
