I’m having intermittant problems outputting a finished timeline via firewire to an external DVD recorder. Sometimes (more often than not), when playing back a timeline, “something” is interrupting the video stream…the 1394 goes black and silent for a second or two, while the computer screen plays back fine. So I have to stop the ruined DVD recording and start over.

This happens even if I’ve done a mixdown, and even if no other programs are open.

My system: PC with dual 2.4 gig Opteron processors. (Ok they’re AMD but they worked fine before I upgraded to XPress Pro HD 5.2.1), 4 gigs of ram. 2 Raptor Internal SATA hard drives in Raid. My media is on external firewire MAXTOR drives (I have several). I’m using the 3 port 1394 Firewire hardware that came bundled with my software from AVID. I have a mojo but it is no longer connected because I got it to import footage from a Beta SP deck which I no longer have.

I feel like there are other processes running when this problem happens. I see the LED that flashes when the Hard Drives are in use start to flicker or come on solid and I know the 1394 stream is about to drop out. When I open Task Manager in Windows I see two dozen or so entries under the Processes tab. And sometimes the “CPU Usage” spikes way up. That may be normal, it may not. I don’t know. I’ve done every thing I know to stop other programs from running. And again…I didn’t have this problem until I upgraded.

The only solution I’ve found is to go to bed and try again in the morning. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn’t. But when you’re on a deadline it sure sux.

    Help?
