[dog food] “Yes the outer case is strong.. But it is in 3 parts.. These parts do not stay together.. YOU kow it.. I know.. The assembly is a JOKE..”

We have two of the S2S units, they are definitely very solid units in our experience. One has been running since January and the other for about two months now. The exterior case reminds me of my old Huge RAID units, so I would definitely say it’s sturdy.

[dog food] “AND, you never know what sound the drive will make. I have many LACIE drives.. I am looking at 7 drives right now.. and none of them make the same sound when running…. and please do not say things like the drives are “sturdy”… after all, how many of these drive do you own?”

We have about 15 different hard drive units in the shop right now from G-RAID’s to LaCie to WiebeTech to Med

    Yo WALTER : )

    please define sturdy?

Cause you know, an egg is actually very sturdy.. If you place an egg with either of the “LONG” ends in the palms of your hand.. it is actually impossible to break.. It is a very NEAT phenomenon… you can squeeze and squeeze with NO breakage..

Just like my LACIE drive.. I can squeeze it as hard as I want and it is sturdy as a tank.. YET, in the past 2 years.. every lacie drive that has come to me through the mail is jacked up (not including brand new lacie drives in their original boxes)….

Yes the box it comes is perfect for transporting the drives.. I have found this out the hard way… and it is not especially convenient when moving 600 hours of footage (www.pullingjohn.com) from SF to NYC.. : )
    cheers

And lets not even begin to talk about FW connections on the LACIE drives.. yikes

I am not trying to dog LACIE… it is just the truth… Why buy LACIE when Western Digital has come out with a new line of superior drives… LACIE had its day..now it is back to the drawing board for lacie.. and center stage for WD…

    : )

    Yo Dog Food 🙂
If you had not been a long time member, I would have thought that you were just a WD rep trying to promote your products 🙂 You are excited by your latest purchase and have a clear preference for a manufacturer and that’s fine. But I have to comment your “truth” 🙂

    – Fact is that LaCie d2, Big Disks and Bigger Disks feature an aluminum casing. WD drives feature a plastic casing.
    – LaCie d2/Big/Bigger drives are assembled in Oregon. The quality of assembly is impeccable and I invite you to visit our facility anytime you want.
    – You said that you did not pack the drives very well. Any kind of hardware that is shipped with poor packaging would get damaged. We ship thousands of drives everyday all over the world to resellers and end users and obviously they arrive in good conditions.
    – We are always developing new products for the Mac platform (17 years and going strong). Other manufacturers are coming late to the Mac, following LaCie’s footsteps. Imitation is the best compliment.

I’d choose aluminum casing on drives over plastic any day. Heat is a HUGE factor in drive failure.

    Yo WALTER : )
    please define sturdy?

As in metal cases, not plastic. As in the same high quality outer case as much more expensive Medea and Huge / Ciprico products.

Yes the box it comes is perfect for transporting the drives.. I have found this out the hard way… and it is not especially convenient when moving 600 hours of footage (www.pullingjohn.com) from SF to NYC.. : )

Why would you do this in the orignal box? Purchase a Pelican case which are hard shell travel cases made for airline and long distance travel.

I am not trying to dog LACIE… it is just the truth… Why buy LACIE when Western Digital has come out with a new line of superior drives… LACIE had its day..now it is back to the drawing board for lacie.. and center stage for WD…

Truth is that why would I purchase Western Digital when they have no history in media production on the Mac? As a System drive? Sure, but not as an external media drive. For media storage it’s going to be LaCie, G-Tech, Medea, Ciprico and the like. There’s more to making a great media product than slapping a hard drive into a shell.

Truth is, it’s easy for people to make absolute statements when they post anonymously.

“Truth is, it’s easy for people to make absolute statements when they post anonymously.”

    WAS THIS COMMENT FOR ME…. : ) ?? LOL

Hey Walter… http://www.grekian.com …. and I have posted one of my other web sites in this thread…

WALTER – Have you used the WD drive? I ask because I have … 4 WD DRIVES and I also have 6+ promax drives and… I have at least 7 (IN USE) Lacie Drives in my CA office….. from 160GB to 1TB …

I also have 4 GTECH drives in my NY office….. WD is thebetter drive

WD is.. cheaper (cost less money) AND
more reliable than LACIE or Promax (I personally have had ZERO problem with WD.. I have had many problems with LACIE and Promax), WD makes the least amount of NOISE… shhhhh

AND WD has a better housing… better than GTECH also

Yes a better housing.. go ahead and drop the lacie drive and then drop the WD drive.. which do you think will absorb the impact better? YES the WD…. just because the LACIE casing can stop a bullet does not mean it is the better housing….

Go ahead and run a test WALTER… mail a few of your drives across the country… wrap them in bubble wrap and peanut foam… : ) I bet you change your tune : ) THE LACIE DRIVES WILL COME APART AT THE END SEAMS

And if heat is an issue.. just try running the 500GB Lacie next to the 500 GB WD.. The Lacie is like a barbecue, while the WD gives off very little heat..

Just my experience.. maybe this is not absolute truth : )

You have helped me a great deal over the years Walter and I appreciate it …

    cheers
