  • FireWire Drive ERROR – Invalid Key Length / Underlying taks reported failure on exit

Posted by Jonathan Holm on June 14, 2005 at 10:46 pm

    Hi Creative Cow!

I am editing a project on FCP 4.5 and was referencing footage from an FW 800 LaCe 400G drive. The drive is now not showing up on the desktop. When I attempt to repair it with Disk Utlity I get the following message:

    Invalid key length
    Volume check failed

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)

I am trying Disk Warrior right now to rebuild the directory but it looks to be progressing slowly. I’ve also tried zapping my P-Ram with no success. Any ideas on what I can do to reaccess data on the drive? This is a deadline project and every minute is critical.

    Thank you,

    Jonathan

[Jonathan Holm] “I am trying Disk Warrior right now to rebuild the directory but it looks to be progressing slowly.”

This can take several hours or more on a 400GB drive. Give it some time to do its job.

    Hi Walter,

Is it normal for the Disk Warrior progress bar to show no movement for long periods of time while it is rebuilding? I have used Disk Warrior before to repair a start up disk on a different computer and that time the progress bar seemed to have more real time feedback. Any thoughts?

Have you used the drive successfully before? Is it properly initialized with Mac OS Extended?

It’s stories like this that make me avoid FireWire drives for mission critical work. Good luck though.

Thanks guys for the help. Disk Warrior actually came through after about 2 hours and while I couldn’t replace the new directory, I was able to access all the files from it and back up the media. The drive itself may be shot. I agree FireWire drives aren’t the best option for mission critical but unfortunately I had no choice.

Actually, I use FW800 drives all the time and trust them enough to cut broadcast shows on them. Both LaCie and G-RAID products are fantastic. Not the same speed as my fibrechanel array, but I don’t have any fear of mission critical work on them.

A BIG issue with FW800 drives is if you plug them into a machine and they are already on or you turn one off before ejecting it. Both of those can cause major issues with both the drive and the G5.
