I’ve done reviews for the Cow for both LaCie Big Disk Extremes and G-RAID’s and highly recommend both of them.

Other World Computing and ProMax both make excellent products as well. Honestly, with the four companies you’re looking at, I don’t really think you can go wrong with any of them.

Whatever machine you have, and if you must use unsupported FireWire drives (Apple doesn’t sanction the use of FireWire drives at all with FCP so YMMV), I suggest you get a PCI card-if you have a tower or a PCMCIA card-if you have a PowerBook to add more FireWire ports to a completely separate bus. You’ll be able to capture to these devices in a more stable way, no doubt.

    Kevin

    Thanks for the tip.

Can you recommend a good PCI card for the G4 733?

How difficult is it to add a PCI card?

[Howie] “Can you recommend a good PCI card for the G4 733?”

    LaCie makes a good one.

Just open the side of the G4 and slip the card into an empty slot. Just be sure to touch something metal in the machine BEFORE grabbing the PCI card to ground yourself.

Is this a pulg and play card, or does the card have to be connected to the mother board?

OK, I Guess you’ve never added a PCI card to your computer? Maybe you should get a knowledgeable friend to show you the first time. You have to put the PCI card in a PCI slot that is, yes, part of the motherboard. It’s simple, very simple – but everyone needs to be shown the ropes at least once. I suggest a mac troubleshooting course so you can do this stuff on your own with no fear. I did the Avid Troubleshooting course back in the day. Set me well on my way….
