Firewire capture- second firewire connection — ideas?
I am waiting for the delivery of a new Octo Mac Pro with Aja ioHD box and am charting out my layout for system connections. I am aware of the limitation not to have other firewire devices on the same bus as the AJA ioHD.
Will adding a firewire card in one of the expansion slots put this on another bus or do I have to swap out the firewire inputs to the Mac Pro by unplugging or using an A/B switch? I have looked at A/B switches and none that I found support FW 800, just 400. The additional firewire connection is to capture with a DVCAM DSR-25 deck (output options are firewire, S-video and composite) I want to avoid plugging and unplugging cables because it is bush league– wearing out jacks, reaching behind gear and the cursing that is sure to follow.I am interested in what solutions others have used.

A FW PCIe card will do you just fine.

Can you recommend a solid 1394 400 card? The 800 would require an adapter that I would like to avoid…. I appreciate your suggestion. I want to be careful not to slide in a $100 card that messes up the performance of my new box.

Why don’t you check out an ESata option. Many times you can purchase an enclosure and get a card to boot!
