Hey, I haven’t found a straight answer to this so I decided to post…

My Mac Pro is not recognizing any cameras hooked into it via firewire. I’ve tried w/a PD-150, and a little consumer panasonic camcorder. I’ve tried the camera’s in other computers and they were recongized (using same firewire cable also); so it’s not the camera or cable. Also – System Profiler doesn’t see the cameras. However, I’m not sure if it’s completely the firewire port because my ext. FW Hard Drive works just fine… So I’m not sure what the problem can be… Any advice on fixing this? Possibly deleting caches or the like? Thanks in advance….

    Hi Andy,
To see if there is any problem with your FW, plug the camera, open QT and open a “New Video Recorder”.
If you get the picture is because your FW is OK.
To make FC recognize your camera:
With the camera plugged, open the capture presets window. Click the actual preset and Duplicate it.
open it to edit and look if it shows your camera name.

    Hey Rafeal,
I tried both and neither worked… The computer doesn’t see the camera anywhere…

That smells to a FW problem.
The definitive test to see if is a FW problem is with iMovie.
If you plug the camera and iMovie do not detect it is that your FW bus is not working.

    I see…

Any ideas on how to go about fixing this? I think it might be software based because my FW harddrive is still recognized.

(imovie and FCP both didn’t recognize the camera when following the steps you instructed)

Are you using the rear FireWire port on the MacPro. The front should be used for FW devices that require communications.

    All the best,

Thanks, I will try that… Why should the front Port be used though? How is it different?
