    Hi,

Im having a few issues setting up Avid/FCP any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂

I have two 1TB hard-drives, I use one to boot MacOSX that has FCP & Avid on it and use the other as a scratch disk/storage. I have a Macbook pro with one firewire 400 port and one firewire 800 port. As I am connecting both hard drives I am using both ports and this leaves me no where to attach a camcorder/deck. Is it possible to set up the boot hard disk with FCP & Avid on it to work as a scratch disk too? or is there a way of getting an additional port?

    Thank-you

So you have a SEPARATE boot drive from the one on the laptop? Why might I ask?

This is what I do. I have my laptops drive partitioned into two drives. Well, my tower too. ANd I have two different OS’s installed on each. One with the specs for Avid, and one for FCP. Then I boot into the one I need. Or you can have both on one partiton, but know that you need to keep versions of the OS and QT that work best with both versions of Avid and FCP.

Then you have your firewire bus free for your media drive.

    Thanks

I’ve booted off a separate drive as I don’t only use my laptop for editing and Avid and FCP were taking up space I needed. I have however just got desktop so il switch back to the internal drive to boot off. May I ask what the specs you have that work best? I have FCP Studio 5 and Avid 3.

    Thank-you

[Justin Wood] “Avid and FCP were taking up space I needed. “

Really? They barely take up any space at all! Avid takes like 900MB…maybe 1TB, and FCP and the other apps, MINUS the audio and MOTION files, maybe 500MB. 1.5GB…. with internal drives being 80GB to 500GB. It really eats up that much space?

Guessing you mean FCP 5, part of Studio 2? Now, is this FCP 5.0? Or FCP 5.1? Because 5.0 doesn’t work on Intel machines. FCP 5 and 5.1 work well with MacOS 10.4.11 up to 10.5.8. QT 7.5 is the top of that though. As for Avid, here is a chart explaining that:
