  • Firewire 800 RAID or internal SATA RAID for HDV editing?

Posted by Steve To on June 14, 2005 at 10:26 pm

OK, on another post about switching to FCP from PC systems another question has arisen….

What’s the best storage option for me to maximise mu RT performance in the G5 2.7Dual that i’m considering buying for HDV editing? I’ll go for 4GB RAM (maybe even 6GB if it woudl help) but what’s best? something like the Miglia 500GB FW800 RAID or 2 internal SATA’s? (do i need a RAID controller? which one? etc etc)

Anyone got any real work experience – i just want to make the best choice for fastest operation and RT performance!

    thanks 🙂

I just reviewed the LaCie Biggest F800 external array. Up to 2TB in one FW 800 enclosure that’s perfect for all flavors of DV. (DV, DVPro, DVPro HD, HDV)

G-RAID is also an outstanding unit that not only supports the DV’s, but easily supports 8bit SD and can even handle 10bit SD as well.

if you go with the internal setup, you don’t need a raid controller. you can stripe 2 matching drives as a raid with the disk utility that is built into os x.

thanks, but i thought there was only space to add in extra ONE HDD in the G5? am i wrong? can i really add in 2 x 400GB SATA’s )as well as the inbuilt 250gb system drive on a dual 2.7)?

    thanks

thanks Walter, i did read yoru review and guess i;m just trying to decide on SATA internal or an external FW800 like this. I already have 4 250GB Lacie FW800 D2 disks, but guess i would need the addition of RAID to really make RT HDV fly, hence the decision to make……

I guess it’s an Internal/External/Cost decision in the end so long as both options will give comparable speeds?!

    thanks again

also, has anyone got any opinions on the miglia dual disk?

i guess i don’t need a whole Terrabyte, so a good ols 2 disk RAID 500GB would suffice just now…

    https://www.miglia.com/products/storage/dualdisk/index.html

anyone used or tried this? want to know if its likely to be as good as the Lacie Biggest Disk 800 Walter reviewed?

    TIA

It’s also a question of flexibility in your workflow. I’m constantly taking my drives to various locations to capture, output, edit, etc…. depending on what I’m doing that week. I work with a lot of producers who cut their own stuff on FCP, other edit facilites and even on studio locations. So the flexibility of having the G-RAID’s and LaCie’s external means I can just pack up the drives and go wherever. I also sometimes send my drives to the client so they can pre-capture the footage before we start the edit.

Just depends on what type of workflow you want.

    Hi,

    RAID is overkill for HDV.

SATA is more reliable than FW.

You can easily have up to five internal SATA drives:
