I just bought the Canon HV40 which is a decent HD camcorder. Unfortunately the camera didn’t come with any firewire hookups to upload the video that I would shoot to the computer. I have a newer iMac. It’s the 24″ screen with the 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Anyway, the iMac only has firewire 800 ports. So I just bought a HDV/DV firewire 800 cable to connect to my machine. It doesn’t register on the capture option for Final Cut Pro. Why not? My other computer works fine with my other Canon camcorder on the firewire 400 ports. Are there some sort of settings I need to adjust on my Final Cut Pro for it to register? Or do only Macs register firewire 400?

Firewire is Firewire. Doesn’t matter what the connection is, it’s still the same wire.

We have Mac Pros that only have the 9pin Firewire connector and have no issues using the 4pin to 9pin cable to run our HDV decks. Make sure your camera is in VTR mode and make sure you connect the camera to the iMac with the camera turned off and Log and Capture NOT open.

It’s definitely on VTR mode. Even if it was on regular camera mode, it should still register some sort of video. I have done that before with my other camera. My other camera works with Final Cut Express but doesn’t work with Final Cut Pro. I have been editing for years but this camcorder just doesn’t seem to want to connect. I got the controls for the camcorder to come up on Final Cut Pro but it doesn’t register the video or audio and I still can’t batch capture. I can control the camcorder with my mouse but that’s about it. I have not done High Def at all. This is my first time. Could this be why? Do I need a special 1080i to firewire 800 cable because there is a 1080i output on the HDV/DV outputs on the camera.

    try this link

there are a lot of choices within it but it will teach you how to capture with that camera.

the cable to use is a standard firewire cable used with most of the dv/hdv mini cams. doesn’t matter if it is 800 or 400 aside from needing the right size plug on the computer end.

connect the cam and be ready to start playing fro capture before loading FCP.

Make sure you have the right capture preset and device control setup. I own an HV20 and it took a few minutes to figure out exactly what was up, it’s a little finicky at times so you may need to refresh a/v devices and close and open the capture window. Are you getting signal? If so just play it from the camera and hit “shift + c” to “capture now.”

What version of FCP are you using?
Is the camera set to down convert HDV to DV?

    Hindsight is always 1080p

That link helped out a ton. I got it. I knew there was some sort of settings inside Final Cut Pro. I always used Express and it wasn’t HD so it was all set up for default film size. I just hand to change my input to 1080i. Awesome. Thanks.
