Firewire 800 for 10 bit uncompressed
Hi,
I am cutting a short, maybe 25 minute project and am finishing in 10 bit-uncompressed. I am looking for a good external hard drive to use.I have seen firewire 800 used with 10 bit uncompressed, but also heard of it’s unreliability. I am looking at a d2 Serial ATA, which is much faster it, but requires a specific card. It seems like it may be irritating to swap from one computer to another, if realistically possible at all.
Should I worry about the firewire 800, or no?

Firewire 800 RAID’s are just enough for 1 stream of 10bit. It will be very slow going as every single transition, filter, etc… will need to be rendered and I don’t recommend FW 800 for 10bit. I also don’t recommend SATA yet either as I’ve heard too many stories about it being unreliable as well.
For me Fibre-channel is the only way to edit 10bit uncompressed material.

I use SATA drives for my everyday operations and have never had a problem yet. BUT, you should know that if you purchase two SATA drives and have them RAIDed together, your reliability wil increase. The more drives, the better the compression. My system is spec for HD so I have a RAID of 8 SATA drives. That is needed for 10-bit uncompressed HD footage. And, two terabytes of SATA is much more cost effective than two terabytes of SCSI. I see where you are going with this but you should look into raiding SATA drives for 10-bit uncompressed. Check drive manufacturers for their standards for video and then purchase based on that.

With Tiger I would not recommend anyone use SCSI any longer. Fibre Channel is much more stable on Tiger than SCSI.
