I have a client who wants to record a lecture series. Each presentation will be 1.5 to 2 hrs long. They would like to record directly to hard drive, but also to back up to tape. Now I can take the FW out of the camera directly to the HD, and the Y/C & audio to an M25 deck, but has anyone been successful in splitting the FW stream to feed both a computer (MBP w/ FCP5.1.2) and the FW input to a deck?

I know there is machine control info going down the FW stream, would that cause problem?

I’m sure there is a wizard that has tried this. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

FW is a super chatty transfer protocol. I’ve tried spliting it out to a laptop and Firestore at the same time, can’t seem to get it to work. Too much data flowing through the pipe.

You would need a firewire hub. Generally, not recommended; just too many things that can go wrong. Trust tape.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

A hub won’t work because Firewire is more like a network protocol and is very chatty. The hub will be flooded with chatter and data and send/recieve it from all connected devices. That’s the technical theory. BUT I am borrowing a FW hub today to test it out. I have a feeling I can make it work. Will report back.

    Take a look a this:

    https://www.lairdtelemedia.com/Product.asp?cat=ROUTERS&subcat=&prodClass=FIREDA&search=0&off=0&baseItem=LTM%2DDVDA5P

It might be what you’re looking for. (It’s still record to tape as a backup.)

Here is another one that works fine for this. I have one and it does it and more. Down load the manual for more info.

Oops, didn’t mean to cut in front of your post Russ, this is the same thing but I have one and can confirm it will do it. I just use it as a firewire wire router but you can split 1 source to 5 outs with this unit.

    more info.
