just saw a video on MTV2 Headbangers ball for a band called Firewind. Song is called “Mercenary Man”.

The end of the video pretty much entirely rips off the Earth Zoom tutorial, down to the use of the actual image for the Earth. Most likely, they just took the project file directly and rendered it.

it also seems as though it was just tacked on for cool factor at the very end of the video.

Just thought it was lame. Not his effect, but the use of it in this way, without any creative use or variation of the idea presented in the tutorial.

I’ve used the concepts I’ve learned by watching tutorials and applied them to work I’ve done, but I never once considered using someone else’s images, footage, or project file outright, without even altering it… and without permission (which I’m not sure if they had it or not)

    the band sucks too…

what do you guys think? Am I being too harsh here?

They actually use it in reverse at the beginning to “zoom in” to the band and one or two places in the middle…

If you want to check it out. And yes, the end is a total ripoff…

it’s on my Tivo. I didn’t care to watch the video, as I’m not a fan… A little too operatic or whatever for my tastes.

I just don’t dig the ripoff. It would be one thing to use the idea and apply your own footage or even just change it up a bit… ya know, maybe use the earth spin tutorial as well and use that as the final image, or maybe even use your own city maps, so that you’re starting from somewhere else… I don’t know if San Francisco ties into their location in the video or not, but it seems like they could have used a shot of LA or NY or wherever.

    Just weak sauce IMHO.

I’m not into them (I’m an old country fart), but my son is a concert promoter and tells me they are from SF.

That said, I agree with you about the footage… Unless they contacted Andrew and got permission (which is a distinct possibility).

Also, if you do watch the whole thing, you’ll see the overall production quality of the video is pretty poor. A few places where the band is out of sync with the music and the shots were obviously rushed. It appears as if whomever edited the video was in a hurry and did an overall poor job anyway.
