    Heyyy…

I’m looking for a good source of general info regarding finshing a 24 frame FCP project on film. Specifically, when the show originated on film. I am messgin around with Cinema Tools to try and figure out what it does as well. One case in point, the question was asked whether or not while editing if one has to make sure that the cuts happen on specific frames (eg. the “A” frame). Although I find it hard to believe that you would need to do that.

    Any suggestions??

    Thanks a bunch.

updated post….. in addition, after doing some reading I have an idea as to a hypothetical workflow … lemme know what you guys think:

film originates on 4-perf 35. Telecine to 30frame video. Digitze using flex files into FCP. Use Cinema Tools to do a reverse-telecine to dump extra frames. Edit 24fps video in FCP.

    That’s as far as I’ve gotten…

    Thanks

Here’s an old reference which will give you the basics of Cinema Tools (graphics are no longer linked).

    https://web.archive.org/web/20050226193147/https://www.editorsguild.com/newsletter/JanFeb03/tip_cinema_tools.html

Also, the Cinema Tools manual is not bad.

    Here’s a quick outline:

Create database in Cinema Tools in the proper format.

Import Flex file into Cinema Tools to create shot records. Check for errors. Export Final Cut Pro Batch list.

Import Final Cut Pro batch list to FCP project. Batch capture in Final Cut Pro.

If desired, reverse telecine the captured clips in Cinema Tools. Link all these new quicktimes to the Cinema Tools database records.

Bring the same clips into Final Cut and cut the movie.

When time to export cut list, use FCP File-export-cinema tools film lists

Point to appropriate Cinema Tools Database.

Not mentioned in this quick outline is how to handle audio, which is a whole ‘nother big consideration.

    Actually Steven,
Things have changed since that article. You can capture directly into FCP and create the CT database from there. Pulldown happens on capture, so that saves a bunch of time.

Wow, I better go read “what’s new in Cinema Tools 3.”

Thanks for the head up, Kevin.

Yes, you should. Let’s just say that I’m very familiar with that doc. 😉
